Contextual Overview

1Moses assembled the entire Israelite community and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do: 2For six days work is to be done, but on the seventh day you are to have a holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the Lord. Anyone who does work on it must be executed. 3Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.” 4Then Moses said to the entire Israelite community, “This is what the Lord has commanded: 5Take up an offering among you for the Lord. Let everyone whose heart is willing bring this as the Lord’s offering: gold, silver, and bronze; 6blue, purple, and scarlet yarn; fine linen and goat hair; 7ram skins dyed red and fine leather; acacia wood; 8oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense; 9and onyx with gemstones to mount on the ephod and breastpiece. 10“Let all the skilled artisans among you come and make everything that the Lord has commanded:

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The ark and the staves thereof,.... To carry it with, which were all made of shittim wood:

[with] the mercy seat; made of pure gold; these were set in the most holy place:

and the vail of the covering; which divided between the holy and the holy of holies; of these see Exodus 25:10.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The covering - This is not the same as the covering of Exodus 35:11, which denotes the covering of the tent (see Exodus 26:14): the word is used here for the entrance curtains (see Exodus 26:36; Exodus 27:16).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Exodus 35:12. The ark — See Exodus 25:10-17.
