Contextual Overview

14The five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish told their brothers, “Did you know that there are an ephod, household gods, and a carved image and a silver idol in these houses? Now think about what you should do.” 15So they detoured there and went to the house of the young Levite at the home of Micah and greeted him. 16The six hundred Danite men were standing by the entrance of the city gate, armed with their weapons of war. 17Then the five men who had gone to scout out the land went in and took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the silver idol, while the priest was standing by the entrance of the city gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war. 18When they entered Micah’s house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the silver idol, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?” 19They told him, “Be quiet. Keep your mouth shut. Come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or for you to be a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?” 20So the priest was pleased and took his ephod, household idols, and carved image, and went with the people. 21They prepared to leave, putting their dependents, livestock, and possessions in front of them.22After they were some distance from Micah’s house, the men who were in the houses near it were mustered and caught up with the Danites. 23They called to the Danites, who turned to face them, and said to Micah, “What’s the matter with you that you mustered the men?”

Gill's Notes on the Bible

So they turned and departed,.... Turned from the gate of the city where Micah dwelt, and marched forward to Laish:

and put the little ones, and the cattle, and the carriage, before them; partly for safety from Micah, and his friends and neighbours, and partly that they might not be overdriven: their wives, who doubtless were with them, though not mentioned, and their children, and also their flocks and herds, they brought with them from Zorah and Eshtaol, as never intending to return again thither, and being fully assured they should take Laish, and the country about, and settle there; and also all their wealth and substance, as the Targum renders the word for "carriage", whatever they were possessed of that was movable; their vessels, silver and gold, and other movables, as Kimchi interprets it, whatever was weighty, valuable and glorious, as the word signifies, or that was of any importance and worth.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And put the little ones, etc., before them - They expected a pursuit from Micah’s people, and arranged their order of march accordingly.

The carriage - Rather, “the valuables.” Some interpret it “the heavy baggage.”

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Judges 18:21. The little ones and the cattle, c. — These men were so confident of success that they removed their whole families, household goods, cattle, and all.

And the carriage — כבודה kebudah, their substance, precious things, or valuables omne quod erat pretiosum, VULGATE: or rather the luggage or baggage; what Caesar calls in his commentaries impedimenta; and what the Septuagint here translate βαρος, weight or baggage. We are not to suppose that any wheel carriage is meant.
