Contextual Overview

1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When someone makes a special vow to the Lord that involves the assessment of people, 3if the assessment concerns a male from twenty to sixty years old, your assessment is fifty silver shekels measured by the standard sanctuary shekel. 4If the person is a female, your assessment is thirty shekels. 5If the person is from five to twenty years old, your assessment for a male is twenty shekels and for a female ten shekels. 6If the person is from one month to five years old, your assessment for a male is five silver shekels, and for a female your assessment is three shekels of silver. 7If the person is sixty years or more, your assessment is fifteen shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female. 8But if one is too poor to pay the assessment, he is to present the person before the priest and the priest will set a value for him. The priest will set a value for him according to what the one making the vow can afford. 9“If the vow involves one of the animals that may be brought as an offering to the Lord, any of these he gives to the Lord will be holy. 10He may not replace it or make a substitution for it, either good for bad, or bad for good. But if he does substitute one animal for another, both that animal and its substitute will be holy.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And if it [be] a female,.... That is, of the same age, full twenty years of age, and not more than sixty:

then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels; about three pounds ten shillings of our money, the price of a servant, Exodus 21:32; the reason of this difference of estimation between a man and a woman is, because the woman is the weaker vessel, and her labour and service of less importance and worth, such as spinning, washing, &c.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The relative values of the persons appear to be regulated according to an estimate of the probable value of their future work:

Ages Male Female
From a month to five years of age 5 shekels 3 shekels
From five years to twenty of age 20 shekels 10 shekels
From forty years to sixty of age 50 shekels 30 shekels
Sixty years of age and older: 15 shekels 10 shekels

As regards the shekel of the sanctuary, see Exodus 38:24 note.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Leviticus 27:4. And if it be a female — The woman, at the same age, vowed unto the Lord, might be redeemed for thirty shekels, 4£. 10s. sterling, a little more than one half of the value of the man; for this obvious reason, that a woman, if employed, could not be of so much use in the service of the sanctuary as the man, and was therefore of much less value.
