Contextual Overview

1 Benjamin was Bela's father. Bela was Benjamin's first son. Ashbel was Benjamin's second son. Aharah was Benjamin's third son. 2 Nohah was Benjamin's fourth son. And Rapha was Benjamin's fifth son. 3Bela's sons were Addar, Gera, Abihud, Abishua, Naaman, Ahoah, Gera, Shephuphan, and Huram. 6These were the descendants of Ehud. They were leaders of their families in Geba. They were forced to leave their homes and move to Manahath. Ehud's descendants were Naaman, Ahijah, and Gera. Gera forced them to leave their homes. He was the father of Uzza and Ahihud. 8 Shaharaim divorced his wives Hushim and Baara in Moab. After he did this he had some children with another wife. 9Shaharaim had Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malcam, Jeuz, Sakia, and Mirmah with his wife Hodesh. They were leaders of their families. 11 Shaharaim and Hushim had two sons named Abitub and Elpaal. 12Elpaal's sons were Eber, Misham, Shemed, Beriah, and Shema. Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

Hodesh: In the preceding verse it is said that "Hushim and Baara were his wives;" and here it said, "he begat of Hodesh his wife," etc; and then in the 1 Chronicles 8:11, his children by Hushim are mentioned, but not a word of Baara. It is probable, therefore, that Hodesh was another name for Baara; and this is asserted by the Targumist: "And he begat of Baara, that is, of Chodesh, his wife, so called because he espoused her anew.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Ver. 9,10. And he begat of Hodesh his wife,.... That is, he, I say, begat, namely, Shaharaim; the Targum makes this Hodesh to be the same with Baara, called so because she was newly espoused; but wrongly: the sons begotten of her were the seven following;

Jobab, Zibia, Mesha, Malcham, Jeuz, Shachia, and Mirma. These were his sons; the sons of Shaharaim by his wife Hodesh:

heads of the fathers; of the houses or families of their father.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Chronicles 8:9. He begat of Hodesh his wife — In the preceding verse it is said that Hushim and Baara were his wives; and here it is said he begat of Hodesh his wife, c. And then his children by Hushim are mentioned, but not a word of Baara! It is likely therefore that Hodesh was another name for Baara, and this is asserted by the Targum: And he begot of Baara, that is Chodesh, his wife so called because he espoused her anew. It is supposed that he had put her away before, and now remarried her.
