Contextual Overview

1 "Now I will tell you what you must do to show that Aaron and his sons serve me in a special way as priests. Find one young bull and two rams that have nothing wrong with them. 2 Then use fine wheat flour without yeast to make bread. And use the same things to make cakes mixed with olive oil. Make small thin cakes spread with oil. 3 Put this bread and the cakes in a basket. Then give the basket to Aaron and his sons. At the same time, give them the bull and the two rams. 4 "Then bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the Meeting Tent. Wash them with water. 5 Put the special clothes on Aaron. Put on him the white woven robe and the blue robe that is worn with the ephod. Put the ephod and the judgment pouch on him. Then tie the beautiful cloth belt on him. 6 Put the turban on his head and the special crown around the turban. 7 Take the anointing oil and pour it on Aaron's head. This will show that he is chosen for this work. 8 "Then bring Aaron's sons to that place. Put the white woven robes on them. 9 Then tie cloth belts around their waists, and give them cloth caps to wear. At that time they will begin to be priests. They will be priests because of the special law that will continue forever. This is the way you will make Aaron and his sons priests. 10 "Then bring the bull to that place at the front of the Meeting Tent. Aaron and his sons must put their hands on the bull's head.

mitre: Mitznepheth, from tzanaph, to wrap round, evidently means that covering of the head so universal in eastern countries, which we call turband, which consists of a cap, and a sash of fine linen or silk wound round its bottom. Exodus 28:36-39, Leviticus 8:9

Reciprocal: Exodus 28:37 - the mitre it Leviticus 21:12 - for the crown Zechariah 3:5 - fair Zechariah 6:11 - make

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And thou shall put the mitre upon his head,.... Which was made of linen, and was a wrap of linen about his head in the form of a turban:

and put the holy crown upon the mitre; the holy crown was a plate of gold which had these words, "holiness to the Lord", engraven on it; and so says the Targum of Jonathan,

"on which the holy name was engraven;''

the mitre was upon the top of his head, this in the forefront of that; it was upon Aaron's forehead, and reached from ear to ear, and was fastened behind with a blue lace; this was like a crown or a diadem, and denotes the honour and dignity of the priestly office: Christ is a priest on his throne, and his saints are a royal priesthood, even kings as well as priests unto God.
