Contextual Overview

10 Then Hananyah the prophet took the bar from off the prophet Yirmeyahu's neck, and broke it. 11 Hananyah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus says the LORD: Even so will I break the yoke of Nevukhadnetztzar king of Bavel within two full years from off the neck of all the nations. The prophet Yirmeyahu went his way. 12 Then the word of the LORD came to Yirmeyahu, after that Hananyah the prophet had broken the bar from off the neck of the prophet Yirmeyahu, saying, 13 Go, and tell Hananyah, saying, Thus says the LORD: You have broken the bars of wood; but you have made in their place bars of iron. 14 For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Yisra'el: I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may served Nevukhadnetztzar king of Bavel; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the animals of the field also. 15 Then said the prophet Yirmeyahu to Hananyah the prophet, Hear now, Hananyah: the LORD has not sent you; but you make this people to trust in a lie. 16 Therefore thus says the LORD, Behold, I will send you away from off the surface of the eretz: this year you shall die, because you have spoken rebellion against the LORD. 17 So Hananyah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Go and tell Hananiah, saying, thus saith the Lord,.... Whose name he had abused; whose prophet he had ill treated; and whose prophecies he had contradicted, and the symbols of them had contumeliously used:

thou hast broken the yokes of wood: or, "bonds", or "the thongs" q; with which the yokes of wood were bound and fastened, as Kimchi interprets it:

but thou shall make for them yokes of iron; not Hananiah, but Jeremiah; who should prophesy of a more severe bondage the nations should be brought into by Nebuchadnezzar, in direct contradiction to Hananiah's prophecy; instead of wooden yokes, they should have iron ones; which should lie heavier, and bear harder upon them, and which could not be broken nor taken off.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 28:13. Yokes of iron. — Instead of Nebuchadnezzar's yoke being broken, this captivity shall be more severe than the preceding. All these nations shall have a yoke of iron on their neck. He shall subdue them, and take all their property, even the beasts of the field.
