(han uh ni' uh) Personal name with two Hebrew spellings meaning, “Yah(weh) is gracious.” 1. Prophet from Gibeon who opposed Jeremiah by promising immediate deliverance from Babylon. Jeremiah could combat this false prophecy only by telling the people to wait until they saw it fulfilled in history (Jeremiah 28:8-9 ). Jeremiah could not even oppose Hannaniah when he tried to embarrass Jeremiah by breaking the symbolic yoke Jeremiah was wearing (Jeremiah 28:10-11 ). Only later did Jeremiah receive a countering word from God to oppose Hananiah (Jeremiah 28:12-17 ). 2 . Father of Zedekiah, a court official, in time of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 36:12 ). 3 . Grandfather of captain of guard who arrested Jeremiah as he left Jerusalem (Jeremiah 37:13 ). 4 . Jewish name of Daniel's friend Shadrach (Daniel 1:7 ). See 1 Chronicles 3:19 ). See 1 Chronicles 8:24 ). 7 . Son of Heman among the priestly musicians in the Temple (1 Chronicles 25:4 ). He may be the same as the head of a course of priests (1 Chronicles 25:23 ), though the latter's name has a slightly variant spelling in Hebrew. 8. Military leader under King Uzziah of Judah (792-740 B.C.) (2 Chronicles 26:11 ). 9 . Man who followed Ezra's leadership and divorced his foreign wife to protect Judah from the temptation to worship foreign gods (Ezra 10:28 ). 10 . A member of the perfumers' guild who helped Nehemiah repair the Jerusalem wall (Nehemiah 3:8 NAS). 11. Man who helped Nehemiah repair the Jerusalem wall ( Nehemiah 3:30 ). 12 . Ruler of the Temple fortress under Nehemiah (Nehemiah 7:2 NAS). Nehemiah set him up as one of two administrators of Jerusalem because he was trustworthy and reverenced God more than other men. 13. Man who signed Nehemiah's covenant to obey God's law; perhaps the same as 12. above ( Nehemiah 10:23 ). 14 . A priest immediately after the time of return from Babylonian Exile (Nehemiah 12:12 ) when Joiakim was high priest. 15. Priest musician who helped Nehemiah celebrate the completion of the Jerusalem wall (Nehemiah 12:41 ).
