Contextual Overview

1 And this is the thing which you shall do to them, to sanctify them to minister as priests to Me: take one bull, the son of the herd, and two rams without blemish, 2 and unleavened bread , and unleavened cakes poured over with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil; you shall make them of fine wheat flour. 3 And you shall put them into one basket and shall bring them near in the basket, and the bull and the two rams. 4 And you shall take Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of congregation. And you shall wash them in water. 5 And you shall take the garments, and you shall clothe Aaron with the tunic, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breast pocket. And you shall bind it to him with the band of the ephod. 6 And you shall put the miter on his head; and you shall put the holy crown on the miter. 7 And you shall take the oil of anointing and shall pour on his head, and shall anoint him. 8 And you shall take his sons and clothe them with tunics. 9 And you shall gird them with girdles, Aaron and his sons; and you shall bind on turbans for them; and it shall be a never ending statute for them in the priest's office. And you shall consecrate Aaron and his sons. 10 And you shall bring near the bull before the tabernacle of the congregation. And Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull.

mitre: Mitznepheth, from tzanaph, to wrap round, evidently means that covering of the head so universal in eastern countries, which we call turband, which consists of a cap, and a sash of fine linen or silk wound round its bottom. Exodus 28:36-39, Leviticus 8:9

Reciprocal: Exodus 28:37 - the mitre it Leviticus 21:12 - for the crown Zechariah 3:5 - fair Zechariah 6:11 - make

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And thou shall put the mitre upon his head,.... Which was made of linen, and was a wrap of linen about his head in the form of a turban:

and put the holy crown upon the mitre; the holy crown was a plate of gold which had these words, "holiness to the Lord", engraven on it; and so says the Targum of Jonathan,

"on which the holy name was engraven;''

the mitre was upon the top of his head, this in the forefront of that; it was upon Aaron's forehead, and reached from ear to ear, and was fastened behind with a blue lace; this was like a crown or a diadem, and denotes the honour and dignity of the priestly office: Christ is a priest on his throne, and his saints are a royal priesthood, even kings as well as priests unto God.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
