Contextual Overview

1 And Moses assembled all the congregation of the sons of Israel and said to them, These are the Words which Jehovah has commanded, to do them: 2 Work may be done six days and on the seventh day it shall be holy to you, a sabbath of rest to Jehovah; everyone doing work in it dying shall die. 3 You shall not kindle a fire in all your dwellings on the day of the Sabbath. 4 And Moses said to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, This is the thing which Jehovah commanded, saying, 5 Take from among you an offering to Jehovah. Everyone willing of heart shall bring it, the offering of Jehovah: gold and silver and bronze, 6 and blue, and purple, and crimson, and bleached linen , and goats' hair , 7 and rams' skins dyed red, and dugong skins, and acacia wood, 8 and oil for the light, and spices for the oil of anointing, and for the incense of perfumes; 9 and onyx stones, and stones of settings, for the ephod and for the breast pocket. 10 And every wise-hearted one among you, let them come and make all which Jehovah has commanded;

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The ark and the staves thereof,.... To carry it with, which were all made of shittim wood:

[with] the mercy seat; made of pure gold; these were set in the most holy place:

and the vail of the covering; which divided between the holy and the holy of holies; of these see Exodus 25:10.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The covering - This is not the same as the covering of Exodus 35:11, which denotes the covering of the tent (see Exodus 26:14): the word is used here for the entrance curtains (see Exodus 26:36; Exodus 27:16).

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Exodus 35:12. The ark — See Exodus 25:10-17.
