THE MESSAGE
"‘Clean up your act—the way you live, the things you do—so I can make my home with you in this place. Don't for a minute believe the lies being spoken here—"This is God 's Temple, God 's Temple, God 's Temple!" Total nonsense! Only if you clean up your act (the way you live, the things you do), only if you do a total spring cleaning on the way you live and treat your neighbors, only if you quit exploiting the street people and orphans and widows, no longer taking advantage of innocent people on this very site and no longer destroying your souls by using this Temple as a front for other gods—only then will I move into your neighborhood. Only then will this country I gave your ancestors be my permanent home, my Temple.
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, "Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.

Contextual Overview

1 The Word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, 2 Stand in the gate of the house of Jehovah and call out there this Word, and say, Hear the Word of Jehovah all Judah, who enter in at these gates to worship Jehovah. 3 So says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4 Do not trust yourself to lying words, saying, The temple of Jehovah! The temple of Jehovah! This is the temple of Jehovah! 5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you truly practice justice between a man and his neighbor; 6 if you do not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow; and do not pour out innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your evil; 7 then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, from forever and to forever. 8 Behold, you trust for yourself on lying words without being of use. 9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know? 10 And will you then come and stand before Me in this house on which My name is called, and say, We are delivered in order to do all those detestable things.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,.... The Lord of armies above and below in general, and the God of Israel in particular; wherefore they ought to hearken to what he was about to say, and to be obedient to him:

amend your ways and your doings; or, "make them good" l; which shows that they were bad, and were not agreeable to the law and will of God, to which they ought to have been conformed; and the way to amend them was to act according to the rule of the divine word they were favoured with:

and I will cause you to dwell in this place; to continue to dwell in Jerusalem, and in Judea, the land of their nativity, and in the temple, the house of God, and place of religious worship; but, if not, it is suggested that they should not continue here, but be carried captive into a strange land.

l היטיבו דרכיכם "bonas facite vias vestras", V. L. Munster, Pagninus, Montanus; "efficite", &c. Junius & Tremellius, Piscator.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

If the people repented, instead of being led into captivity, God would maintain their national existence. It is a promise of the continuance of an old blessing.
