Contextual Overview

1 And He began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard, and set a fence around it ," and dug a winevat, "and built a tower." And he rented it to vinedressers and went away. Isa. 5:1, 2 2 And at the season, he sent a slave to the vinedressers, that he might receive from the vinedressers the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But taking him, they beat him , and sent him away empty. 4 And again he sent to them another slave; stoning that one, they struck him in the head and sent him away, insulting him. 5 And again, he sent another, and they killed that one; also many others, indeed beating these, and killing these. 6 Yet having one son, his own beloved, then he sent him to them also, last of all , saying, They will have respect for my son. 7 But these vinedressers said to themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours. 8 And taking him , they killed him and threw him outside the vineyard. 9 What, then, will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and will destroy the vinedressers and will give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not even read this Scripture: The "Stone which the builders rejected, this One came to be Head of the Corner;

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And have ye not read this Scripture?.... In

Psalms 118:22 these are the words of Christ directed to the above persons, who were, many of them, teachers of the people, and therefore ought to have read the scriptures, and have taken notice of, and considered more especially such as respected the Messiah, as this passage did, and was very appropriate to the case in the parable Christ had respect unto:

the stone which the builders rejected, is become the head of the corner: by "the stone" is meant the same with the son and heir in the parable, even himself, the true Messiah; and by "the builders", the chief priests, Scribes, and elders, the same with the husbandmen, whose rejection of the stone, or of the Messiah, is signified by their seizing him, casting him out of the vineyard, and killing him; and yet notwithstanding all this, according to this Scripture, he was to be, and now is become, the head of the corner, exalted above angels and men, at the right hand of God;
