Contextual Overview

1 My son, if you are surety for your friend, if you struck your hands with an alien, 2 you are snared with the words of your mouth; you are captured with the words of your own mouth. 3 My son, do this then, and deliver yourself when you come into the hand of your friend: go lower yourself and be bold to your friend. 4 Do not give sleep to your eyes, or slumber to your eyelids. 5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from a hand of a hunter , and as a bird from the fowler's hand.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Until the above things are done; which denotes of what consequence and importance they are; and that persons in such circumstances should not be careless, dilatory, and unconcerned; but should use great diligence, and leave no stone unturned, or method untried, to extricate themselves; see Psalms 132:4.
