THE MESSAGE
"If a man or woman develops a sore on the head or chin, the priest will offer a diagnosis. If it looks as if it is under the skin and the hair in it is yellow and thin, he will pronounce the person ritually unclean. It is an itch, an infectious skin disease. But if when he examines the itch, he finds it is only skin deep and there is no black hair in it, he will put the person in quarantine for seven days. On the seventh day he will reexamine the sore; if the itch has not spread, there is no yellow hair in it, and it looks as if the itch is only skin deep, the person must shave, except for the itch; the priest will send him back to quarantine for another seven days. If the itch has not spread, and looks to be only skin deep, the priest will pronounce him clean. The person can go home and wash his clothes; he is clean. But if the itch spreads after being pronounced clean, the priest must reexamine it; if the itch has spread in the skin, he doesn't have to look any farther, for yellow hair, for instance; he is unclean. But if he sees that the itch is unchanged and black hair has begun to grow in it, the itch is healed. The person is clean and the priest will pronounce him clean.

18 Whan there is a byle in the Ãkynne of eny mans flesh, and healeth agayne, 19 and afterwarde in the same place there aryse vp eny whyte thinge, or a glisterynge whyte somwhat reedish, he shal be sene of the prest. 20 So whan the prest, seyeth, that it appeareth to be lower then the other Ãkynne, and the hayre turned to whyte, then shall he iudge him vncleane, for it is surely a plage of leprosye broken out of the byle. 21 But yf the prest se and fynde, that the hayres are not whyte, and it not lower then the other Ãkynne, and is darkysh, he shal shut him vp seuen dayes. 22 Yf it hath frett farther in the Ãkynne, then shal he iudge him vncleane, for it is surely a plage of leprosye. 23 But yf the glysterynge whyte abyde styll, and freate no farther, the is it but a prynte of the byle, and the prest shal iudge him cleane. 24 Whan the Ãkynne of eny mans flesh is hurt with fyre, and the prynte of the burninge be reedysh or whyte, 25 and the prest loketh vpon him, and fyndeth the hayre turned to whyte vpon the mark of the burnynge, & it apeare deper then the other Ãkynne, the is there surely a leprosy broke out of ye prynte of ye burnynge: therfore shal ye prest iudge hi vncleane, for it is a plage of leprosye. 26 But yf the prest se and fynde, that ye hayre vpon the prynte of the burninge is not turned vnto whyte, & is no lower then the other skynne, and is darkish also, he shall shut him vp seuen dayes. 27 And vpon the seuenth daye he shall loke vpon him: yf it hath frett farther in ye skynne, then shal he iudge him vncleane, for it is a leprosy.

If a man or a woman hath a plague upon the head or the beard. Any breaking out in those parts a swelling, scab, or spot, on a man's beard or on a woman's head; or on the head of either man or woman; or on a woman's beard, if she had any, as some have had though not common.

Verse 29. A plague upon the head or the beard — This refers to a disease in which, according to the Jews, the hair either on the head or the chin dropped out by the roots.
