Contextual Overview

1 And he rose vp, and came from thence in to the places of Iewry beyonde Iordan. And the people wete agayne vnto him by heapes, and as his maner was he taught them agayne. 2 And the Pharises came vnto him, and axed him, yf it were laufull for a man to put awaye his wife, and tempted him withall. 3 But he answered and sayde: What hath Moses comaunded you? 4 They sayde: Moses suffred to wryte a testimoniall of deuorcemet, and to put her awaye. 5 Iesus answered, and sayde vnto them: Because of ye hardnesse of yor hert dyd Moses wryte you this commaundement. 6 But from the first creacion God made the man and woman. 7 For this cause shal a man leaue his father & mother, and cleue vnto his wife, 8 and they two shalbe one flesh. Now are they not twayne the, but one flesh. 9 Let not man therfore put asunder that, which God hath coupled together. 10 And at home his disciples axed him agayne of ye same.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But from the beginning of the creation,.... Of the world, or of man: מתחלת ברייתו של עולם, "from the beginning of the creation of the world", is a way of speaking often used by the Jews r: the phrase "of the creation" is left out in the Syriac and Persic versions; and so it was in Beza's most ancient copy, and it is only read, "from the beginning", as in Mt 19:4,8, :-,

:-.

God made them male and female; the first that were created, Adam and Eve, the first parents of mankind, the first couple that came together were one male and one female; so that there could be no polygamy or divorce: Adam could not have more wives than one: nor could he put away Eve, and marry another; no provision was made for any such usages and practices; :-. In the Complutensian edition, it is added, "and said", the following words.

r Bereshit Rabba, sect. 3. fol. 2. 3. & sect. 4. fol. 4. 1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See this question about divorce explained in the notes at Matthew 19:1-12.

Mark 10:12

And if a woman shall put away her husband - It would seem, from this, that a woman, among the Jews, had the power of separating herself from her husband, yet this right is not given her by the law of Moses. There is not, however, any positive evidence that females often claimed or exercised this right. Cases had occurred, indeed, in which it had been done. The wife of Herod had rejected her former husband and married Herod. And though instances of this kind “might” have been attempted to be defended by the example of Pagans, yet our Saviour was desirous of showing them that it did not free them from the charge of adultery. The apostles were going forth to teach Pagan nations, and it was proper for Christ to teach them how to act in such cases, and to show them that they were cases of real adultery.
