THE MESSAGE
The Message Jeremiah received from God in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah. It was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. At that time the army of the king of Babylon was holding Jerusalem under siege. Jeremiah was shut up in jail in the royal palace. Zedekiah, king of Judah, had locked him up, complaining, "How dare you preach, saying, ‘ God says, I'm warning you: I will hand this city over to the king of Babylon and he will take it over. Zedekiah king of Judah will be handed over to the Chaldeans right along with the city. He will be handed over to the king of Babylon and forced to face the music. He'll be hauled off to Babylon where he'll stay until I deal with him. God 's Decree. Fight against the Babylonians all you want—it won't get you anywhere.'"
New American Standard Bible (1995)
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.

Contextual Overview

1 In the tenth year that Zedekiah was ruling over Judah the Lord spoke to Jeremiah. That was the same as the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 Now at that time, the armies of the king of Babylon were besieging Jerusalem. The prophet Jeremiah was confined in the courtyard of the guardhouse attached to the royal palace of Judah. 3 For King Zedekiah had confined Jeremiah there after he had reproved him for prophesying as he did. He had asked Jeremiah, "Why do you keep prophesying these things? Why do you keep saying that the Lord says, ‘I will hand this city over to the king of Babylon? I will let him capture it. 4 King Zedekiah of Judah will not escape from the Babylonians. He will certainly be handed over to the king of Babylon. He must answer personally to the king of Babylon and confront him face to face. 5 Zedekiah will be carried off to Babylon and will remain there until I have fully dealt with him. I, the Lord , affirm it! Even if you continue to fight against the Babylonians, you cannot win.'" 6 So now, Jeremiah said, "The Lord told me, 7 ‘Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, will come to you soon. He will say to you, "Buy my field at Anathoth because you are entitled as my closest relative to buy it."' 8 Now it happened just as the Lord had said! My cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guardhouse. He said to me, ‘Buy my field which is at Anathoth in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. Buy it for yourself since you are entitled as my closest relative to take possession of it for yourself.' When this happened, I recognized that the Lord had indeed spoken to me. 9 So I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I weighed out seven ounces of silver and gave it to him to pay for it. 10 I signed the deed of purchase, sealed it, and had some men serve as witnesses to the purchase. I weighed out the silver for him on a scale.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord,.... The word of prophecy, as the Targum, concerning Jeremiah's buying the field of his uncle's son, Jeremiah 32:6; and concerning the delivery of the city of Jerusalem into the hands of the Chaldeans, Jeremiah 32:26; and the return of the captivity, Jeremiah 32:36;

in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which [was] the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar; the same with Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, a year before the taking of the city by him; for that was in the eleventh of Zedekiah, and the nineteenth of Nebuchadnezzar; see

Jeremiah 52:1.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The siege of Jerusalem began in Zedekiah’s ninth year Jeremiah 39:1, but was temporarily raised upon the approach of an Egyptian army. See Jeremiah 37:0; Jeremiah 38:0.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXXII

Jeremiah, now confined for his faithful admonitions, foretells

the fate of the king and city, 1-5.

According to the direction of God, he buys of his cousin

Hanameel a field in Anathoth; the contract, or deed of sale,

being subscribed, sealed, and witnessed, and delivered to

Baruch, together with a duplicate not sealed, who is commanded

to put them into an earthern vessel that they may remain there

for many days, 6-14.

This transaction of the prophet, which is entered and

subscribed in the public register, God constitutes a sign or

pledge of the Jews' return from the Babylonish captivity, and

of their again possessing houses, fields, and vineyards, in

their own land, and by their own right, according to their

tribes and families, 15.

Jeremiah's prayer, in which he recounts God's marvellous acts

towards the children of Israel, and deeply deplores the

lamentable state of the country, and the numerous provocations

which have led to it, 16-25.

After which God is introduced declaring his purpose of giving

up his people into the hands of their enemies, 26-35;

promising, however, to restore them in due time to their

ancient possessions, and to make with them an everlasting

covenant, 36-44.

NOTES ON CHAP. XXXII

Verse Jeremiah 32:1. The word that came — This prophecy bears its own date: it was delivered in the tenth year of Zedekiah, which answered to the eighteenth of Nebuchadnezzar. It appears from 2 Kings 25:8, that the eleventh year of Zedekiah was the nineteenth of Nebuchadnezzar; and consequently, that the eighteenth of that monarch must have been the tenth of the Jewish king.
