Desperate, I throw myself on you: you are my God! Hour by hour I place my days in your hand, safe from the hands out to get me. Warm me, your servant, with a smile; save me because you love me. Don't embarrass me by not showing up; I've given you plenty of notice. Embarrass the wicked, stand them up, leave them stupidly shaking their heads as they drift down to hell. Gag those loudmouthed liars who heckle me, your follower, with jeers and catcalls.

⁹ Have mercy on me, for I am in distress! My eyes grow dim from suffering. I have lost my strength. ¹⁰ For my life nears its end in pain; my years draw to a close as I groan. My strength fails me because of my sin, and my bones become brittle. ¹¹ Because of all my enemies, people disdain me; my neighbors are appalled by my suffering— those who know me are horrified by my condition; those who see me in the street run away from me. ¹² I am forgotten, like a dead man no one thinks about; I am regarded as worthless, like a broken jar. ¹³ For I hear what so many are saying, the terrifying news that comes from every direction. But I trust in thee, O Lord - In these times of trial - when Psalms 31:9 his eye was consumed with grief; when Psalms 31:10 his years were spent with sighing, his strength failed, and his bones were consumed; when Psalms 31:11 he was a reproach among his neighbors, and dreaded by his acquaintances; when Psalms 31:12 he was forgotten as a dead man; and when Psalms 31:13 he was surrounded with causes of alarm. Then he trusted in God. His confidence did not fail. He believed that God was his Father and Friend; that He was on the throne; that He could protect and defend him; and he left himself and his cause with Him. In such circumstances as these there is no other sure refuge but God; at such times the strength of faith is shown, and then is seen pre-eminently the power and value of religion.

I said, Thou art my God - Thou art all that is implied in the name “God;” and thou art mine. He felt assured that God would not forsake him, though men did; that he might confide in Him, though his earthly friends all turned away.
