Bethlehem: Bethlehem, called Bethlehem Judah - Judges 17:7, to distinguish it from another Bethlehem in Zebulun - Joshua 19:15, and also Ephratah - i.e., fruitful and by the Arabs, Bait-el-lahm, is situated on a rising ground on the southern side of a deep and extensive valley, and reclining from e to w not quite six miles s of Jerusalem. About noontime Elijah began mocking them. "You'll have to shout louder," he scoffed, "for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is daydreaming, or is relieving himself. Or maybe he is away on a trip, or is asleep and needs to be wakened!"
Young people, it's wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do.
His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.

He built even Bethlehem,.... The place of our Lord's birth, about six miles from Jerusalem:
and Etam; another city in the tribe of Judah; see 1 Chronicles 4:32, there was a rock of this name, Judges 15:8 and a fountain from whence waters were conveyed into the pool at Jerusalem, spoken of in Jewish writings b:
and Tekoah; of which place Amos the prophet was, and which was about twelve miles from Jerusalem. Rauwolff c speaks of it as a fortified place now; he says it has a strong and mighty castle, built on a great and high hill.
