Contextual Overview

1 The gate-keepers were divided up. Of the Korahites there was Meshelemiah the son of Kore, a son of Asaph. 2 Meshelemiah's sons were Zechariah the first-born, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth. 3 Elam was his fifth son, Johanan the sixth, Eliehoenai the seventh. 4 Obed-edom's sons were Shemaiah the first-born, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, Sacar the fourth, Nethanel the fifth. 5 Ammiel was his sixth son, Issachar the seventh, and Peullethai the eighth. God had brought good to the father. 6 To his son Shemaiah sons were born who ruled over their father's house. They were strong, able men with strength of heart. 7 The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed and Elzabad. Their brothers, Elihu and Semachiah, were strong and able men. 8 All these were sons of Obed-edom. They and their sons and brothers were able men with strength for the work. There were sixty-two men from Obed-edom. 9 Meshelemiah had sons and brothers, eighteen strong and able men. 10 These are the sons of Hosah, one of Merari's sons: Shimri was the first. (He was not the first-born, but his father made him first.)

Gill's Notes on the Bible

To Obededom southward,.... Where were two gates in later times, called the gates of Huldah x:

and to his sons, the house of Asuppim; the word has the signification of gathering, hence some take it to be a council house, where the sanhedrim or elders gathered together, and sat; and others, rather a treasure house, where things of value were collected and laid up, since Obededom had the charge of gold and silver, and the vessels of the house, 2 Chronicles 25:24, but Dr. Lightfoot y is of opinion, that

"Asuppim were two gates in the western wall, which stood most south, or nearest to Jerusalem; "and the house of Asuppim" was a large piece of building that ran between them, which was a treasury, or various rooms for treasuring or laying up something for the use of the temple;''

though L'Empereur thinks z it was the chamber Korban, which is not so probable.

x Ib. (Misn. Middot), c. 1. sect. 3. y Prospect of the Temple, ch. 5. sect. 3. z Not. in Middot, c. 1. sect. 1. No. 5.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The house of Asuppim - literally, “the house of collections” (see the margin and compare Nehemiah 12:25 margin). A treasure-house of some kind or other is probably intended.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible
