THE MESSAGE
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king and reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem. He lived well before God , doing the right thing for the most part. But he wasn't wholeheartedly devoted to God. When he had the affairs of the kingdom well in hand, he executed the palace guard who had assassinated his father the king. But he didn't kill the sons of the assassins—he was mindful of what God commanded in The Revelation of Moses, that parents shouldn't be executed for their childrens' sins, nor children for their parents'. We each pay personally for our sins.
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

Contextual Overview

1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king. And he ruled for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not with a whole heart. 3 As soon as the nation was under his rule, he killed his servants who had killed his father the king. 4 But he did not kill their children. He did what is written in the Law in the book of Moses. The Lord had said in this Law, "Fathers must not be put to death for the children. And children must not be put to death for the fathers. Each must be put to death for his own sin." 5 Then Amaziah gathered the men of Judah together. He put them, by their fathers' houses, under the rule of captains of thousands and of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He numbered those who were twenty years old and older. And he found that they were 300,000 chosen men, able to go to war and fight with spear and battle-covering. 6 He also asked for the help of 100,000 powerful soldiers from Israel and paid them with silver weighing as much as 100 men. 7 But a man of God came to him and said, "O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you. For the Lord is not with Israel. He is not with all these sons of Ephraim. 8 But if you think that in this way you will be strong in war, God will destroy you in front of those who fight you. For God has power to help and to destroy." 9 Amaziah said to the man of God, "But what should I do about the silver weighing as much as 100 men, which I have given to the army of Israel?" The man of God answered, "The Lord has much more to give you than this." 10 Then Amaziah sent the army home which had come to him from Ephraim. These hired soldiers were angry at the people of Judah. As they returned home they were very angry.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

This chapter is evidently taken to a large extent from the same document as Kings (see the marginal reference and the notes). At the same time it contains large and important additions; e. g. 2 Chronicles 25:5-10, 2 Chronicles 25:13-16.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXV

Amaziah succeeds his father Joash, and begins his reign well,

1, 2.

He slays his father's murderers but spares their children, 3, 4.

He reviews and remodels the army, 5;

and hires a hundred thousand soldiers out of Israel, whom, on

the expostulation of a prophet, he sends home again, without

bringing them into active service; at which they are greatly

offended, 6-10.

He attacks the Syrians, kills ten thousand, and takes ten

thousand prisoners, whom he precipitates from the top of a

rock, so that they are dashed to pieces, 11, 12.

The Israelitish soldiers, sent back, ravage several of the

cities of Judah, 13.

Amaziah becomes an idolater, 14.

Is reproved by a prophet, whom he threatens, and obliges to

desist, 15, 16.

He challenges Joash, king of Israel, 17;

who reproves him by a parable, 18, 19.

Not desisting, the armies meet, the Jews are overthrown, and

Amaziah taken prisoner by Joash, who ravages the temple, and

takes away all the treasures of the king, 20-24.

The reign of Amaziah: a conspiracy is formed against him; he

flees to Lachish, whither he is pursued and slain; is brought

to Jerusalem, and buried with his fathers, 25-28.
