THE MESSAGE
It was December. The king was sitting in his winter quarters in front of a charcoal fire. After Jehudi would read three or four columns, the king would cut them off the scroll with his pocketknife and throw them in the fire. He continued in this way until the entire scroll had been burned up in the fire.

Contextual Overview

20 So they went to the king in the open space, but they had put the book in the room of Elishama the writer. And they told all the words to the king. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the book, and he took it out of the room of Elishama the writer. And Jehudi read it to the king and to all the leaders who stood beside him. 22 It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house with a fire burning in the fireplace in front of him. 23 When Jehudi had read three or four parts, the king cut them with a small knife and threw them into the fire in the fireplace. He did this until the book was destroyed in the fire. 24 The king and all his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, and they did not tear their clothes. 25 Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the book, but he would not listen to them. 26 And the king told Jerahmeel the king's son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to take hold of Baruch the writer and Jeremiah the man of God. But the Lord had hidden them. 27 Now the Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the book with the words Jeremiah had told Baruch to write down. The Lord said, 28 "Take another book and write in it all the words that were in the first book which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned. 29 And about Jehoiakim the king of Judah you will say, ‘This is what the Lord says: "You have burned this book, saying, ‘Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will be sure to come and destroy this land and put an end to every man and animal in it?'"

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

A warm apartment suited to the season of the year (December, when snow is often upon the ground in Palestine), in which was a pan or brazier (ach or ikhkh as it is pronounced in Arabic) of burning charcoal; for we learn from Bp. Pococke, and Dr. Russel, that this was the mode in which the Orientals warmed their apartments. Jeremiah 22:14-16, Jeremiah 3:20, Amos 3:15

Reciprocal: 2 Chronicles 34:19 - that he rent

Cross-References

1 Chronicles 1:39
The sons of Lotan were Hori and Homam. Lotan's sister was Timna.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Now the king sat in the winter house, in the ninth month,.... The month Cisleu, which answers to part of November, and part of December; and so was the midst of winter, and a proper time for the king to be in his winter house; though, as this was a fast day, it would have been more proper for him to have been at the worship of God in the temple, Jeremiah 36:9. This winter house probably was a winter parlour, as distinguished from a summer parlour, Judges 3:20; and both might be under the same roof, or parts of the same house; only the one might be more airy and cool, and the other more close and warm. Kings had their summer and winter houses; see Amos 3:15; this circumstance is mentioned for the sake of what follows, the burning of the roll; and accounts for there being a fire at hand to do it:

and [there was a fire] on the hearth burning before him; there was a stove, or some such vessel or instrument, in which a large fire of wood was made, at which the king sat to keep himself warm while the roll was reading, and about which the princes stood.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The winterhouse - A separate portion of the palace was used for residence according to the season (marginal reference).

And there was a fire on the hearth ... - And the fire-pan burning before them. On the middle of the floor was a brazier containing burning charcoal.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 36:22. Winterhouse — A warm apartment suited to the season of the year, (December,) when in Palestine there is often snow upon the ground, though it does not last long. A fire on the hearth-a pan or brazier of burning coals. This is the case to the present day. In cold weather the rich burn wood in brass or earthen pans, placed in any part of the room; the indigent burn sticks on the floor.
