THE MESSAGE
God spoke to Moses: "Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the Israelites. Tell them, This is what God commands: Any and every man who slaughters an ox or lamb or goat inside or outside the camp instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting to offer it to God in front of The Dwelling of God —that man is considered guilty of bloodshed; he has shed blood and must be cut off from his people. This is so the Israelites will bring to God the sacrifices that they're in the habit of sacrificing out in the open fields. They must bring them to God and the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and sacrifice them as Peace-Offerings to God . The priest will splash the blood on the Altar of God at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and burn the fat as a pleasing fragrance to God . They must no longer offer their sacrifices to goat-demons—a kind of religious orgy. This is a perpetual decree down through the generations.
New American Standard Bible (1995)

Contextual Overview

1 And Yahweh spake unto Moses saying: - 2 Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons and unto all the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say unto them, - This, is the thing which Yahweh hath commanded, saying: 3 What man soever, there be of the house of Israel, who slayeth an ox or lamb or goat, in the camp, - or who slayeth it outside the camp; 4 and, unto the entrance of the tent of meeting, bringeth it not in, to present as an oblation unto Yahweh, before the habitation of Yahweh, blood, shall be imputed to that man - blood, hath he shed, therefore shall that man be cut off from the midst of his people: 5 to the end that the sons of Israel may bring in their sacrifices which they are offering upon the face of the field, that they may bring them in unto Yahweh - unto the entrance of the tent of meeting, unto the priest, - and that so as peace-offerings unto Yahweh, they may offer them. 6 Then shall the priest dash the blood against the altar of Yahweh, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, - and shall make a perfume of the fat, as a satisfying odour unto Yahweh; 7 so shall they no more offer their sacrifices unto demons after whom they are unchastely going away, - a statute age-abiding, shall this be to them unto their generations. 8 Wherefore, unto them, shalt thou say: What man soever, there may be of the house of Israel, or of the sojourners that sojourn in their midst, - who causeth to go up an ascending-offering, or a sacrifice; 9 and unto the entrance of the tent of meeting, doth not bring it in, to offer it unto Yahweh, then shall that man be cut off from among his kinsfolk.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the Lord spake unto Moses,.... After he had given him the law about the day of atonement, and the rites belonging to it:

saying; as follows.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

This chapter, in its immediate bearing on the daily life of the Israelites, stands as the first of four Lev. 17–20 which set forth practical duties, directing the Israelites to walk, not in the way of the pagan, but according to the ordinances of Yahweh.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

The people are commanded to bring all the cattle they intend to

kill to the door of the tabernacle, where they are to be made

an offering to the Lord; and those who disobey are to be cut

off, 1-5.

The priest is to sprinkle the blood, 6.

They are forbidden to offer sacrifices to devils, 7.

The injunction to bring their offerings to the door of the

tabernacle is repeated, 8, 9.

The eating of blood is solemnly forbidden, 10.

It is the life of the beast, and is given to make an atonement

for their souls, 11, 12.

poured out and covered with dust, for the reasons before

assigned, 13, 14.

None shall eat an animal that dies of itself, or is torn by

beasts; if any act otherwise he must bathe his clothes and his

flesh, or bear his iniquity, 15, 16.
