Contextual Overview

19While Pete was still ponderin' the dream, the Holy Ghost said, "There's some boys here to get you. 20Go ahead and go with them. Don't fret. I'm the one who sent them." 21Pete went downstairs and said, "I'm Pete. What can I do for y'all, gents?" 22One of them said, "Our boss, Cornelius, a Roman officer, sent us to fetch ya. He's well respected and rides for God. An angel told him to send for ya and we're here to take you back so you can give him your message." 23Pete invited everyone to spend the night so they could ride out at sunrise the next day. They left out at daylight for Caesarea and some boys from Joppa rode with them. 24When they arrived a day later, Cornelius was waiting on them. He gathered his whole family and some good buddies to listen to what Pete had to say. 25When Pete arrived, Cornelius fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26But Pete lifted him up and said, "Whoa, cowboy. I'm just a man like you." 27They talked for a second and then went inside where many people were waiting. 28The first thing Pete said was, "Now y'all know it is against the Jewish Code for me to walk in someone's house who ain't Jewish. But God showed me yesterday that things have changed. No one is unclean in his eyes anymore.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 31. Thy prayer is heardActs 10:4; Acts 10:4. Cornelius prayed, fasted, and gave alms. It was in this way he looked for salvation; not to purchase it: a thought of this kind does not appear to have entered into his mind; but these were the means he used to get his soul brought to the knowledge of the truth. The reader must recollect that in the case of Cornelius there was no open vision; he used the light and power which God had already given; and behold how mightily God increased his gifts! He that hath, i.e., that uses what he has, shall receive; and no man can expect any increase of light or life, who does not improve the grace already given.
