Contextual Overview
1 In Caesarea, there was a Roman Regiment Captain named Cornelius.
2He followed God and so did all his family. He prayed every day and helped the poor as much as he could.
3One afternoon, an angel visited him and said, "Hey, Cornelius!"
4Cornelius was spooked something awful, but he managed to ask, "Yes, sir?"The angel said, "Listen, buddy. God has seen what you've been doing and he thinks it's awesome.
5Send some of your men over to Joppa and tell them to bring Pete to you.
6He's staying with a fellow named Simon near the sea."
7The angel left and Cornelius immediately called for two of his servants and one of his most loyal soldiers.
8He filled them in on what had just happened and sent them to Joppa to fetch Pete.

And now send men to Joppa,.... Which lay near to Caesarea;
and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: the angel was not sent to instruct Cornelius himself, but to direct him to an apostle of Christ, and minister of the Gospel, who should do it; for not angels, but men, are employed in the ministry of the word, which is the ordinary means of spiritual knowledge, and of increasing it. So the eunuch was instructed by Philip, and Saul by Ananias; which shows the excellency and usefulness of the Gospel ministry and ministers, and what dignity is put upon them, what use should be made of them, and in what esteem they should be had.
