Cross-References
The cowboys saddled up and headed for Jerusalem. They stopped in Phoenicia and Samaria to visit those who had previously been gathered and were now cowboying for God's outfit. They told them, much to everyone gladness, the unbranded mavericks were also being allowed to ride for God and were being saved.
Paul's words echoed in their ears that they would never see him again. The range bosses from Ephesus escorted him to the boat, tipped their hats, and went out to do the job God had given them.
When it was time to leave, these cowboys and their families followed us out of the city and then prayed with all of us.
I'm going to go to Spain and I'll stop in Rome to see y'all. I'll stay with y'all a while so you can offer me some much needed rest before I head out again.
They came here and told us how you treated them. Keep on helping them all like this. If they are riding for the Lord, then send them away with enough that they can keep spreading the word. God likes that.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
And he drave them from the judgment seat. He would not hear, and try the cause; but dismissed them with threatening them, if ever they brought an affair of that kind to him any more.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
And he drave them ... - He refused to hear and decide the controversy. The word used here does not denote that there was any violence used by Gallio, but merely that he dismissed them in an authoritative manner.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Acts 18:16. And he drave them from the judgment seat. — He saw that their accusation was both frivolous and vexatious, and he ordered them to depart, and the assembly to disperse. The word αÏηλαÏεν, which we translate he drave, does not signify here any act of violence on the part of Gallio or the Roman officers, but simply an authoritative dismission.
