Contextual Overview

1 When the dust had settled, Paul said his goodbyes and struck a long trot for Macedonia. 2He stopped at ranches along the way and spread the word to anyone who would listen. He finally made his way all the way down to Greece. 3He stayed there about three months doing what God had called him to do for so long. He was about to board a ship for Syria when he heard of a plot by some Jews. So, Paul doubled back and gave them the slip as we went back the way he'd come through Macedonia. 4Seven cowboys rode with him: Pyrrhus's boy Sopater from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and finally Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 5These cowboys scouted ahead and waited for us in Troas. 6We stuck around for the Passover week at Philippi and then took a boat five days later to Troas. There we camped out for seven days.

2 Corinthians 1:12
If I can say I'm proud of something we've done, it's been that everything we've done has been with a pure and honest heart. We've put our faith in God's grace, not human understanding. You saw this first hand when we met y'all.
1 Thessalonians 2:10
Y'all saw with your own eyes, and God was watching too, how we conducted ourselves in a manner worthy of the Lord every single day.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

These going before,.... The apostle into Asia, all but Sopater, who accompanied him:

tarried for us at Troas; a city in Asia Minor; see Acts 16:8 whither they went before hand a nearer way, to provide for the apostle, and where they waited for him, and for Sopater, and for Luke, the writer of this history, who appears from hence to be in company with the apostle, and for as many others as were along with him.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

These going before - Going before Paul and Luke. Dr. Doddridge supposes that only Tychicus and Trophimus went before the others. Perhaps the Greek most naturally demands this interpretation.

Tarried for us - The word “us,” here, shows that Luke had again joined Paul as his companion. In Acts 16:12 it appears that Luke was in Philippi, in the house of Lydia. Why he remained there, or why he did not attend Paul in his journey to Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, etc., is not known. It is evident, however, that he here joined him again.

At Troas - See the notes on Acts 16:8.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Acts 20:5. Tarried for us at Troas. — See the preceding verse. Troas was a small town in Phrygia Minor, in the province called the Troad: see Acts 16:8.
