¹²The next morning a group of Jewish rabble-rousers got together and made a promise that they wouldn't eat or drink until they killed Paul. ¹³Over forty people made this pledge. ¹⁴They went to the Jewish movers and shakers and told them of their vow. They said, "We've made an oath not to eat or drink until the outlaw Paul is dead. ¹⁵We need you to talk to the Roman commander and have him bring Paul back for some more questioning. We will ambush Paul while he is being transferred. He won't live another day." ¹⁶But Paul's nephew on his sister's side heard the plot and went to the garrison to tell Paul about the plan to ambush and kill him. ¹⁷Paul asked to speak to one of the officers and said, "It's extremely important that this young man be allowed to speak to the commander. It's a matter of life and death." ¹⁸The officer took the young boy to the commander and the officer whispered in the commander's ear, "Paul, the prisoner, said it was a life and death matter that this boy be allowed to speak to you." ¹⁹The commander looked around and then took the boy by the shoulder and led him a little way away and said, "What is it, son?" ²⁰Paul's nephew said, "The Jews are going to ask you to bring my uncle back to them for some more questioning. ²¹But this is all a ruse, sir. There are forty people lined up along the street who are going to ambush Paul and kill him. They've even taken a vow not to eat or drink until he is dead. I believe they've already made the request for tomorrow. They're just waiting for you to agree."

So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain,.... Immediately, without any more to do, without curiously inquiring into the thing, or examining the young man about it; which showed him to be a man of a good disposition, and ready to do a kind office, even to a prisoner:

and said, Paul the prisoner called me to him; either vocally or by some gesture, beckoned him to him:

and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee; in which may be observed the apostle's manner of address to the centurion, on this occasion; it was by way of entreaty; he asked it as a favour of him, to introduce his nephew to the chief captain; and the honour and modesty of the centurion, he did not seek by any methods to get the secret out, either of Paul or the young man; but readily undertakes the affair, honourably performs it, acquaints the captain with the circumstances of it, tells him the young man had something to say to him, he could not tell what, and then departs.
