¹³They took him first to Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the head preacher at that time. ¹⁴Caiaphas is the one who said, "It's better that one man should die rather than all of them." ¹⁵Pete and another cowboy followed at a distance. The other cowboy knew the head preacher and was allowed to enter the courtyard with Jesus. ¹⁶Pete waited outside. The other cowboy spoke to the girl working the gate and Pete was allowed in. ¹⁷As they walked in, the girl working the gate asked, "Wait a minute. Aren't you one of the cowboys who ride for the man they just arrested?""Nope," Pete said. "Don't know who you're talking about." ¹⁸The night was cold, and the servants had made a fire in the courtyard. Pete stood with them warming himself. ¹⁹Inside the house, Annas started asking Jesus about his message and what he taught his cowboys. ²⁰Jesus said, "I don't need to repeat myself. Y'all have heard everything I've said in the churches and the main church courtyard where all the Jews hang out. I haven't been secretive about one thing. ²¹Why ask me what I said? Ask those that heard me." ²²The final word had barely come out of Jesus's mouth when a guard standing close by slapped him in the face and said, "That ain't no way to talk to the head preacher."

Annas: Annas was dismissed from being high priest, ad 23, after filling that office for fifteen years; but, being a person of distinguished character, and having had no fewer than five sons who had successively enjoyed the dignity of the high-priesthood, and the present high priest Caiaphas being his son-in-law, he must have possessed much authority in the nation. It was at the palace of Caiaphas where the chief priests, elders, and scribes were assembled the whole of the night to see the issue of their stratagem. John 18:13, Matthew 26:57

Now Annas had sent him bound,.... As he found him, when the captain, band, and officers brought him to him; who having pleased himself with so agreeable a sight, and had asked him some few questions, and perhaps insulted him, sent him away in this manner,

unto Caiaphas the high priest: his son-in-law, as the more proper person to be examined before; and especially as the grand council was sitting at his house. This was done before Peter's first denial of Christ; which, it is plain, was in the palace of the high priest, and not in Annas's house; though there seems no reason on this account to place these words at the end of the 13th verse, as they are by some, since they manifestly refer to time past, and do not at all obscure or hinder the true order of the history, as standing here.
