Contextual Overview

22Then Jesus spoke again to his twelve cowboys, "So don't fret about what you will eat or wear. 23True life is more than feeding your stomach and clothing your body. 24Look at the crows. They don't farm or ranch. They don't even have a barn to store their grain in, but the Boss still gives them food. And you are more loved than crows. 25Can frettin' about something add even one minute to a day? 26And if frettin' can't even fix a small problem, why are you wastin' all that time frettin' about the big stuff? 27Think about the flowers you see while ridin' through your pastures. They don't do anything to clothe themselves in such beauty. But I'm telling you the truth that even the wise King Solomon could not spend all the money in the world and dress as beautiful as they. 28So if the Boss takes such care with flowers that are here one day and gone the next, how much more will he care for you? Why do you doubt God so much? 29"Don't worry about where your food and drink comes from. These things are trivial compared to the more important things in life. 30People who don't know or trust in God worry and fret about things like these. But the Boss already knows all your needs and will provide for you. 31You just saddle up and ride for him, and he will take care of all your needs.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

But rather seek ye the kingdom of God,.... The Vulgate Latin version adds, "first", as also, "and his righteousness", as in Matthew 6:33 and the Ethiopic version reads, "seek his kingdom and righteousness" meaning either the grace of God, which is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost,

Romans 14:17 or the heavenly glory; unless the Gospel, and the dispensation of it, which is the Messiah's kingdom, and which was then just ushering in, should rather be intended.

And all these things shall be added unto you; food and raiment, which are as much as can be enjoyed; and godliness with these, and contentment with them, is great gain; Romans 14:17- :.
