Contextual Overview

11Everyone was listening to everything Jesus was saying. He told them a story because everyone was thinking that God's outfit was coming very soon. 12He said, "A hard cow boss was summoned to the ranch owner's house far away to be made the ranch manager. 13Before he left, he called together ten cowboys and gave them each a young colt to work with while he was gone. 14But many people who worked on the big ranch hated the cow boss and didn't want him to be the ranch manager. 15"After he was made the ranch manager, he returned to his ranch and called in all the cowboys he'd given colts to. He wanted to see what they'd done with the horses. 16The first cowboy said, 'Hey boss. I started your colt, and now you can rope off him, cut cattle, and even throw a little kid up on him if you're of a mind to.' 17"'Great job, cowboy!' the new ranch manager said. 'You've done well. You were given a little and returned it to me better. I'm going to make you the new cow boss.' 18"The next cowboy said, 'Here you go boss. I've started your colt, and you can drag calves off of him. He's moving real good off your feet, too.' 19"'You too did a great job, cowboy!' the ranch manager said. 'I'm going to make you the wagon boss of this outfit.' 20"But the third cowboy walked up with his horse and handed it back to the ranch manager. The cowboy said, 'I kept him safe for you. I was afraid to do anything with him for fear he'd get hurt, and you'd get mad.

Cross-References

2 Peter 2:6
Sodom and Gomorrah were two outfits that got what was coming to them. They were utterly destroyed with fire and brimstone as an example to what happens to people living godless and shameless lives.
Jude 1:7
Don't forget about Sodom and Gomorrah. Their people acted like those angels. They all indulged in sexual immorality and perversion. Those cities and their peoples were destroyed. Think of it like a warning shot from God for all of us not to ride those trails.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he said unto them that stood by,.... The angels, it may be; though this may not be strictly taken, as if any persons, angels, or men, will be employed in what follows, only that it will be done, or may be expected:

take from him the pound; which shows, that it was not special grace, for that is a good part that shall never be taken away, but gifts which may be taken away from men, or they from them:

and give it to him that hath ten pounds; not that, strictly speaking, the gifts of some men are taken from them and bestowed on others; but the design of the expression is to show, that to diligent and laborious ministers, there is an increase of gifts; their knowledge enlarges, and their light shines more and more to the perfect day, and they become more useful; and they appear brighter, and more illustrious, through the sloth of others, or when compared with indolent, negligent, and useless ministers.
