¹¹Everyone was listening to everything Jesus was saying. He told them a story because everyone was thinking that God's outfit was coming very soon. ¹²He said, "A hard cow boss was summoned to the ranch owner's house far away to be made the ranch manager. ¹³Before he left, he called together ten cowboys and gave them each a young colt to work with while he was gone. ¹⁴But many people who worked on the big ranch hated the cow boss and didn't want him to be the ranch manager. ¹⁵"After he was made the ranch manager, he returned to his ranch and called in all the cowboys he'd given colts to. He wanted to see what they'd done with the horses. ¹⁶The first cowboy said, 'Hey boss. I started your colt, and now you can rope off him, cut cattle, and even throw a little kid up on him if you're of a mind to.' ¹⁷"'Great job, cowboy!' the new ranch manager said. 'You've done well. You were given a little and returned it to me better. I'm going to make you the new cow boss.' ¹⁸"The next cowboy said, 'Here you go boss. I've started your colt, and you can drag calves off of him. He's moving real good off your feet, too.' ¹⁹"'You too did a great job, cowboy!' the ranch manager said. 'I'm going to make you the wagon boss of this outfit.' ²⁰"But the third cowboy walked up with his horse and handed it back to the ranch manager. The cowboy said, 'I kept him safe for you. Gill's Notes on the Bible

And they said unto him,.... The bystanders;

Lord, he hath ten pounds; which they say either through envy, at his superior gifts, and usefulness; for it is generally the lot of the most eminent and useful servants of Christ to be envied by others; or in surprise, as wondering at the conduct of Christ in giving more to such, who had so much already. The Ethiopic version reads the words by way of interrogation, "hath he not ten pounds?" is not that enough? why should he have more? This verse is left out in Beza's most ancient copy. However, it is rightly put into a parenthesis in our version; for the following verse is strictly connected with Luke 19:24 and contains a reason of what is there ordered.

And they said unto him - Those standing around him said.

He hath ... - This was probably an observation made by some of the bystanders, as if surprised at such a decision. “He has already ten pounds. Why take away this one, and add to what he already possesses? Why should his property be increased at the expense of this man, who has but one pound?” The answer to this is given in the following verse; that every one that hath, to him shall be given; every man who is faithful, and improves what God gives him, shall receive much more.

Verse 25. And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds. — This whole verse is omitted by the Codex Bezae, a few others, and some copies of the Itala. It is probably an observation that some person made while our Lord was delivering the parable, with a design to correct him in the distribution: as if he had said, "Why give the mina to that person? he has got ten already; give it to one of those who has fewer."
