Contextual Overview

29When they left the church, they rode over to Simon and Andrew's line camp.James and John were still with them and as they all walked in, 30it was apparent that Simon's mother-in-law had something bad sick about her. They were asking Jesus what should be done when 31he just pushed passed them, took her by the hand, and helped her stand up. By the time she reached her feet, she was as right as spring rain. She felt so good she went in and fried up some frijoles and tortillas. 32That evening, people started coming by the line camp and asking Jesus to fix all those people who had an evil way about them or 33those who were feeling mighty poorly. 34Jesus fixed ever' single one of 'em. He didn't let any of the demons open their mouths because they knew who he was and Jesus wasn't ready for everyone to know just yet. 35The next morning, Jesus was saddled up way before daylight. He rode a far piece out into the pasture to be alone and pray. 36Simon and the other cowboys looked and looked for him. 37When they finally found him, they said, "Everyone is scouring the country for you." 38Jesus swung up in the saddle and said, "Let's make a big circle into the surrounding country so I can tell people the good news. That's why my Dad sent me."

Galilee: Galilee was a province of Palestine, being bounded, says Josephus, on the west by Ptolemais and mount Carmel; on the south by the country of Samaria and Scythopolis, on the river Jordan; on the east by the cantons of Hyppos, Gadara, and Gaulon; and on the north by the confines of the Tyrians. It was divided into Lower and Upper Galilee; - Upper Galilee, so called from its being mountainous, was termed Galilee of the Gentiles - Matthew 4:15, because inhabited, says Strabo, by Egyptians, Arabians, and Phoenicians, and comprehended the tribes of Asher and Naphtali; the Lower Galilee contained the tribes of Zebulun and Issachar, and was sometimes termed the Great Field. It was, says Josephus, very populous and rich, containing 204 cities and towns.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he preached in their synagogues,.... Which were in the next towns, in the village cities, and

throughout all Galilee: taking every town and city in his circuit, he continued preaching the Gospel of the kingdom in one place and another, until he had gone over the whole country:

and cast out devils; as out of the souls, so out of the bodies of men, whereby he confirmed the doctrine he preached.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And he preached in their synagogues - See Matthew 4:23.

All Galilee - See Matthew 1:22.

And cast out devils - See Matthew 4:24.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 39. And he preachedHe continued preaching - ην κηρυσσων: this is the proper meaning of the words: he never slackened his pace-he continued proclaiming the glad tidings of salvation to all - there was no time to be lost - immortal souls were perishing for lack of knowledge; and the grand adversary was prowling about, seeking whom he might devour. This zealous, affectionate, and persevering diligence of Christ should be copied by all his servants in the ministry; it is not less necessary now than it was then. Thousands, thousands of Christians, so called, are perishing for lack of knowledge. O God, send forth more and more faithful labourers into thy vineyard!
