swear: Heb. lift up my hand, The ancient mode of appealing to God was by lifting up the right hand, and was considered as a form of swearing. Hence yamin, in Hebrew the right hand, is in Arabic an oath, and as a verb, to take an oath. A similar custom prevailed among the heathens. See Virg. n. 1. xii. v. 196. And I will bring you in unto the land,.... The land of Canaan:
concerning the which I did swear; or lift up my hand a, which was a gesture used in swearing, Genesis 14:22

and I will give it you for an heritage; to be possessed as an inheritance by them, so long as they were obedient to his will, or until the Messiah came:

Verse Exodus 6:8. Which I did swear — נשאתי את ידי nasathi eth yadi, I have lifted up my hand. The usual mode of making an appeal to God, and hence considered to be a form of swearing. It is thus that Isaiah 62:8 is to be understood: The Lord hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength.
