¹¹ And there dwelt an olde prophet in Bethel, and his sonnes came and tolde him al the workes that the man of God had done that day in Bethel, and the wordes which he had spoken vnto the king tolde they their father also. ¹² And their father sayde vnto them: What way went he? And his sonnes shewed him what way the man of God went which came from Iuda. ¹³ And he saide vnto his sonnes: Saddle me the asse. Which when they had saddled, he gat him vp thereon, ¹⁴ And went after the man of God, and founde him sytting vnder a tree, and he said vnto him: Art thou the man of God that camest from Iuda? And he sayde, I am. ¹⁵ He sayde vnto him: Come home with me, and eate bread. ¹⁶ He aunswered: I may not returne with thee, to go in with thee: neither wyl I eate bread, or drinke water with thee in this place. ¹⁷ For it was saide to me in the word of the Lord: Thou shalt eate no bread, nor drinke water there, nor turne againe to go by the way that thou camest. ¹⁸ He saide vnto him: I am a prophet also as well as thou, and an angell spake vnto me in the word of the Lorde, saying: Bryng him againe with thee into thyne house, that he may eate bread, & drinke water. And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah,.... His mind being greatly affected with the word brought to him, partly on his own account, who, by a lie his conscience must accuse him of, had been the means of seducing the man of God, and partly on his account, who was threatened with death for complying with him:

saying, thus saith the Lord; being obliged to deliver, in the name of the Lord, what was said unto him:

forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord; the order that came out of his mouth, as follows:

and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee; not to eat nor drink in Bethel.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord - It was his duty not to have suffered himself to be persuaded. He should have felt that his obedience was being tried, and should have required, ere he considered himself released, “the same, or as strong, evidence,” as that on which he had received the obligation. Disobedience to certain positive commands of God, was one which it was at this time very important to punish signally, since it was exactly the sin of Jeroboam and his adherents.

Verse 1 Kings 13:21. And he — That is, according to the above interpretation, the voice of God from heaven addressing the man of God, the old prophet having nothing to do in this business.
