Contextual Overview

21 Amon was two and twentie yeres old when he began to raigne, and raigned two yeres in Hierusalem. 22 But he did euill in the sight of the Lord, like as dyd Manasse his father: for Amon sacrifised to all the carued images whiche Manasse his father had made, and serued them. 23 And submitted not him selfe before the Lorde, as Manasse his father had meekened him selfe: but Amon trespassed greatly. 24 And his owne seruauntes conspired against him, and slue him in his owne house. 25 But the people of the lande slue al them that had conspired against king Amon: and the same people of the lande made Iosia his sonne king in his roome.

as did Manasseh: 2 Chronicles 33:1-10, 2 Kings 21:1-11, 2 Kings 21:20, Ezekiel 20:18

for Amon sacrificed: Amon's conduct is recorded as like his father Manasseh, in sacrificing to graven images; by which some think it is an evidence that Manasseh did not truly repent, but they forget how many good kings had wicked sons. In one point of view Manasseh was defective, although it cannot be supposed that it affected his eternal state; for when he cast out the images, he did not utterly deface and destroy them, according to the law in Deuteronomy 7:5, which required, moreover, that the graven images should be burnt with fire. How necessary that law was, this instance shows; for the carved images being only thrown aside, and not burnt, Amon knew where to find them, soon set them up, and sacrificed to them. Isaiah 44:13-20

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Chronicles 33:22. Sacrificed unto all the carved images — How astonishing is this! with his father's example before his eyes, he copies his father's vices, but not his repentance.
