¹⁷ Then the chiefe priest rose vp, and all they that were with hym, which is the sect of the Saducees, and were full of indignation: ¹⁸ And layed handes on the Apostles, and put them in the common prison. ¹⁹ But the Angel of the Lorde by nyght opened the prison doores, and brought them foorth, and sayde: ²⁰ Go, and stande & speake in the temple to the people, all the wordes of this lyfe. ²¹ And when they hearde that, they entred into the temple early in ye mornyng, and taught: But the chiefe priest came, and they that were with hym, & called a counsayle together, and all the elders of the chyldren of Israel, and sent to the pryson to fet them. ²² But when the officers came, & founde them not in the pryson, they returned, and tolde, ²³ Saying: The pryson truely founde we shut with all diligence, & the kepers standyng without, before the doores: But when we had opened, we founde no man within. ²⁴ Then when the chiefe priest and the ruler of the temple, and the hye priestes hearde these thynges, they doubted of them, whervnto this woulde growe. ²⁵ Then came one and shewed them, saying: Beholde, the men that ye put in pryson, stande in the temple, and teache the people.

But when the officers came,.... The Arabic version adds, "to it"; that is, to the prison;

and found them not in the prison. The Vulgate Latin version reads, "the prison being opened they found them not"; when they came to the prison, they opened the doors of it, or the keepers for them; for though the angel had opened them for the apostles, yet he shut them again, as he brought them out; for these men found the doors shut, as the following verse shows, and who upon opening them and searching the prison, for the apostles, could find none of them in it; wherefore they returned; the Arabic version reads, "to them"; to the sanhedrim:

and told; that is, them, as both the Arabic and Ethiopic versions read.
