Contextual Overview

1 The hande of the Lorde was vpon me, and caried me out in the spirite of the Lorde, and set me downe in the midst of a plaine fielde that was full of bones. 2 And he led me rounde about by them, and beholde, there were very many in the open fielde, and lo [they were] very drye. 3 Then saide he vnto me: Thou sonne of man, thinkest thou these bones may liue againe? I aunswered, O Lorde God, thou knowest. 4 And he saide vnto me, Prophecie thou vpon these bones, & speake vnto them: Ye drye bones, heare the worde of the Lorde, 5 Thus saith the Lorde God vnto these bones: Beholde, I wyll cause breath to enter into you, that ye may lyue. 6 I wyll geue you sinowes, and make fleshe growe vpon you, and couer you ouer with skinne, & so geue you breath, that ye may liue, and knowe that I am the Lorde. 7 So I prophecied as I was comaunded: and as I was propheciyng, there was a noyse, and lo a great motion, so that the bones came neare together, bone to his bone. 8 Now when I had loked, behold they had sinowes, & flesh grewe vpon them, and aboue they were couered with skin: but there was no breath in them. 9 Then saide he vnto me: Thou sonne of man, prophecie thou towarde the winde, prophecie & speake to the winde, thus saith the Lorde God: Come, O thou ayre from the foure windes, and blowe vpon these slaine, that they may lyue. 10 So I prophecied as he had commaunded me: then came the breath into them, and they receaued lyfe, and stoode vp vpon their feete, a marueilous great armie.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Then he said unto me, son of man,.... Here follow the explication and application of the above vision:

these bones are the whole house of Israel; an emblem of them, of their state and condition in the Babylonish captivity, and of them in their present state; and of the whole Israel of God, while in a state of unregeneracy: this phrase takes in the ten tribes, as well as the two tribes of Benjamin and Judah, which returned from Babylon; and shows that respect is had to something more than that restoration barely:

behold, they say, our bones are dried; the house of Israel say we are like dry bones indeed; we have no spirit, nor strength, nor courage, nor life in us:

and our hope is lost; of being delivered from the present captivity; or of the Messiah's coming; or of ever enjoying their own land, and of the promises of those things made unto them:

we are cut off for our parts; from the land of Israel, and have no hope of possessing it again, whatever others have; indeed they are cut off from the olive tree, and are cut down like a tree, both as to their civil and church state. The Targum is,

"and we are perished;''

it is all over with us; we are lost and undone; all the expressions show the desperate and despairing condition they were in.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

We are cut off for our parts - That is, “as for us, we are cut off.” The people had fallen into despair.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Ezekiel 37:11. These bones are the whole house of Israel — That is, their state is represented by these bones; and their restoration to their own land is represented by the revivification of these bones.
