Contextual Overview

1 Moreouer, the worde of the Lorde came vnto Ieremie againe whe he was yet bounde in the court of the prison. 2 Thus saith the Lord who made Hierusale, who fashioned the same to establishe it, whose name is the Lorde: 3 Crye vnto me, and I wyll aunswere, and shewe thee great and hye thinges whiche were vnknowen vnto thee. 4 Thus [I say] speaketh the Lorde god of Israel, concerning the houses of this citie, and the houses of the kynges of Iuda that are broken thorowe the ordinaunce and the sworde. 5 The inhabitours of this citie haue come to fight against the Chaldees, and they are filled with the dead carkasses of men, whom I haue slayne in my wrath and displeasure, when I turned my face from this citie, because of al her wickednesse. 6 Beholde saith the Lorde, I wyll repaire and heale their woundes, and make them whole: I wyll open them the large treasure of peace and trueth, 7 And wyll returne the captiuitie of Iuda and Israel, and wyll set them vp agayne as they were before: 8 From all misdeedes wherein they offended against me, I wyll clense them: and all their blasphemies which they haue done against me when they regarded me not, I wyll forgeue them. 9 And this shall get me a name, a prayse and honour among all the people of the earth, whiche shall heare all the good that I wyll shewe vnto them, yea they shalbe afraide and astonied at all the good deedes and benefites that I wyll do for them.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Call unto me, and I will answer thee,.... This is spoken not to Jerusalem, and the inhabitants of it; but to the prophet, encouraging him to seek the Lord by prayer, promising an answer to him. So the Targum,

"pray before me, and I will receive thy prayer:''

and show thee great and mighty things; or, "fortified ones" p; which are like fortified cities, that cannot easily be come at, unless the gates are opened to enter into; and designs such as are difficult of understanding, which exceed human belief, and which reason cannot comprehend and take in; and such are the great things of the Gospel. Some copies read it, "things reserved" q; as the Targum; and so Jarchi, who interprets it of things future, of things reserved in the heart of God, and which he purposed to do; and very rightly:

which thou knowest not; until revealed; and from hence it appears, that by these great and hidden things are not meant the destruction of Jerusalem, and the seventy years' captivity, and return from that, things which Jeremiah had been made acquainted with time after time, and had prophesied of them; but spiritual blessings hereafter mentioned, some of which the deliverance from Babylon were typical of Ben Melech interprets these of comforts great and strong.

p בצרות "munita", Vatablus, Paganinus, Montanus; "fortia", Tigurine version. q נצרות "abstrusa", Junius Tremellius, Piscator "recondita", so some in Vatablus.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Mighty things - Or, as in the margin. The words are probably a quotation from Isaiah 48:6.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 33:3. Call unto me, and I will answer thee — To me alone it belongs to reveal what is future; and the stupendous things which are now coming are known only to myself. These idolaters go to their gods to get information relative to the issue of the present commotions; but there is no light in them. Ask thou, O Jeremiah, and I will tell thee the great and mighty things which even thou knowest not.
