¹⁴ Nowe when halfe of the feast was done, Iesus went vp into the temple, and taught. ¹⁵ And the Iewes marueyled, saying: howe knoweth he the scriptures, seyng that he neuer learned? ¹⁶ Iesus aunswered them, & sayde: My doctrine is not myne, but his yt sent me. ¹⁷ Yf any man wyll do his wyll, he shall knowe of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speake of my selfe. ¹⁸ He that speaketh of hym selfe, seketh his owne praise: But he that seketh his praise that sent hym, the same is true, & no vnryghteousnes is in hym. ¹⁹ Dyd not Moyses geue you a lawe, & [yet] none of you kepeth the lawe? Why go ye about to kyll me? ²⁰ The people aunswered and sayde: Thou hast the deuyll, who goeth about to kyll thee? ²¹ Iesus aunswered, & said vnto the: I haue done one worke, & ye al marueyle. ²² Moyses therefore gaue vnto you the circumcisio (not because it is of Moyses, but of the fathers) And yet ye on the Sabboth day, circumcise a man. ²³ Yf a man on the Sabboth day receaue circumcision, without breakyng of the lawe of Moyses: disdayne ye at me, because I haue made a man euerywhyt whole on the Sabboth day?

But I know him,.... His nature and perfections, his purposes and promises, his council and covenant, his mind and will; and indeed none knows him but he, and those to whom he pleases to reveal him; and there is good reason why he should have intimate and perfect knowledge of him:

for I am from him; being the only begotten of him, and as such lay in his bosom, and knew him, and his whole heart, and was privy to all of him, and that that is within him;

and he hath sent me; in an office capacity to redeem his people. This is the original descent of Christ, which the Jews knew not, though they pretended to know him, and whence he was.

Verse 29. But I know him: for I am from him — Instead of ειμ, I am, some editions, the Syriac Hieros. read ειμι, I came, according to the Attics. Nonnus confirms this reading by paraphrasing the word by εληλυθα, I came. As the difference between the two words lies only in the accents, and as these are not found in ancient MSS., it is uncertain which way the word was understood by them: nor is the matter of much moment; both words amount nearly to the same meaning and ειμι, I came, seems too refined.
