³⁷ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Iesus stoode and cryed, saying: Yf any man thirste, let him come vnto me and drynke: ³⁸ He that beleueth on me, as saith the scripture, out of his belly shall flowe ryuers of water of lyfe. ³⁹ (But this spake he of the spirite, which they yt beleue on hym, should receaue. For the holy ghost was not yet [there] because Iesus was not yet glorified.) ⁴⁰ Many of the people therfore, when they hearde this saying, sayde: Of a trueth this is the prophete. ⁴¹ But other sayde, this is Christe: But some saide, shall Christe come out of Galilee? ⁴² Sayth not the scripture, that Christe shall come of the seede of Dauid, and out of the towne of Bethlehem, where Dauid was? ⁴³ So was there discention among the people, because of hym. ⁴⁴ And some of them woulde haue taken hym, but no man layde handes on him.

And some of them would have taken him,.... Some of the latter sort, who did not believe he was the Messiah; who were the most averse to him, and hot and furious against him; these were for seizing him at once in a violent manner, and for carrying him before the sanhedrim, as an impostor and blasphemer to be examined and tried, and judged by them, to whom it belonged to judge and determine concerning such persons:

but no man laid hands on him; though they had a good will to it, no man had power to do it; they were held back and restrained by the providence of God; and were diverted from it upon one consideration or another; either fearing the people, or being awed by the majesty of Christ's countenance, or words; the true reason of which was, that which is before given, that his hour was not yet come.

Verse 44. Would have taken him — Or, they wished to seize him. And this they would have done, and destroyed him too at that time, had they been unanimous; but their being divided in opinion, John 7:43, was the cause, under God, why his life was at that time preserved. How true are the words of the prophet: The wrath of man shall praise thee; and the remainder thereof thou wilt restrain! Psalms 76:10.
