Eyther who is he that gaue thee this aucthoritie? ³ Iesus aunswered, & sayde vnto them: I also wyll aske you one thyng, & aunswere me. ⁴ The baptisme of Iohn, was it from heauen, or of men? ⁵ And they reasoned within the selues, saying, Yf we say from heauen, he wyll say, why then beleued ye hym not? ⁶ But and yf we say of men, all the people wyll stone vs: For they be perswaded that Iohn is a prophete. ⁷ And they aunswered, that they coulde not tell whence it was. ⁸ And Iesus saide vnto them: Neither tell I you by what aucthoritie I do these thynges.

Ver. 7 And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was. Whether from heaven, or of men; in this, no doubt, they told an untruth: but they chose rather to sacrifice their consciences than their interest, and pretend ignorance rather than profess the truth, when they saw they should be put to confusion, or be exposed to the resentments of the people.
