Contextual Overview

9 [Like as] the children of Ephraim, which beyng harnessed & carying bowes: turned their backes in the day of battayle. 10 They kept not the couenaunt of God: and they woulde not walke in his law. 11 But they forgat his workes: and his wonders which he had shewed them. 12 Marueylous thinges dyd he in the sight of their fathers: in the land of Egypt, in the fielde of Zoan. 13 He deuided the sea and let them go thorowe: he made the waters to stande as on an heape. 14 In the day time also he led them with a cloude: and all the night through with a light of fire. 15 He cloued the harde rockes in the wildernes: & gaue them drinke therof, as it had ben out of the great deepe waters. 16 He brought running streames out of a stonie rocke: and caused waters to gushe downe, like as out of riuers. 17 Yet for all this they sinned still against hym: so that they prouoked the most hyghest in the wildernesse. 18 And they temped god in their heartes: in requiring meate for their lust.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And they remembered that God was their Rock,.... Who had delivered them out of the hands of their enemies, had strengthened them against them, and supported and protected them, as well as supplied them with all good things, of whom they had been greatly unmindful; but affliction was a means of refreshing their memory; see Deuteronomy 32:15,

and the high God their Redeemer; who had redeemed them out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, with a high hand and a mighty arm, and thereby showed himself to be the most high God: between this and the following verse the Masorah puts this note,

"half of the book,''

i.e. half of the book of Psalms ends here.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And they remembered that God was their Rock - See Deuteronomy 32:4, Deuteronomy 32:15, Deuteronomy 32:31. Compare the notes at Psalms 18:2. That is, they were brought to reflect that their only security and defense was God. They were made to feel that they could not rely on themselves, or on any human power, and that their only trust was in God.

And the high God their Redeemer - The God who is exalted over all; the true and living God. The truth was brought to their recollection that it was He who had delivered them from bondage in Egypt, and who had brought them out into freedom. On the word “Redeemer,” see the notes at Isaiah 41:14. Compare Isaiah 43:14; Isaiah 44:6, Isaiah 44:24; Isaiah 47:4; Isaiah 59:20; Psalms 25:22; Job 5:20.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Psalms 78:35. That God was their rock — They recollected in their affliction that Jehovah was their Creator, and their Father; the Rock, the Source, not only of their being, but of all their blessings; or, that he was their sole Protector.

And the high God their Redeemer. — ואל עליון גאלם veel elyon goalam, "And the strong God the Most High, their kinsman." That one who possessed the right of redemption; the nearest akin to him who had forfeited his inheritance; so the word originally means, and hence it is often used for a redeemer. The Hebrew word גאל goel answers to the Greek σωτηρ, a saviour; and is given to the Lord Jesus Christ, the strong God, the Most High, the Redeemer of a lost world. After this verse there is the following Masoretic note: חצי הספר chatsi hassepher, "The middle of the book." And thus the reader has arrived at the middle of the Psalter, a book for excellence unparalleled.
