Versículo 1 Reyes 3:5 . El Señor se le apareció a Salomón en un sueño. Esta fue la noche después de haber ofrecido los sacrificios (ver 2 Crónicas 1:7 ),
y probablemente después de haber orado fervientemente por la sabiduría; véase Sabiduría 7:7: Por eso oré, y se me dio entendimiento: invoqué a Dios, y el espíritu de sabiduría vino a mí. Si este fuera el caso, el sueño podría haber sido la consecuencia de su ferviente oración por la sabiduría: las imágenes de aquellas cosas que ocupan la mente durante el día son más propensas a repetirse durante la noche; y esto, de hecho, es el origen de la mayor parte de nuestros sueños. Pero esto parece haber sido sobrenatural.
Gregory Nyssen, hablando de diferentes tipos de sueños, observa que nuestros órganos y cerebro no son diferentes de un instrumento musical; mientras las cuerdas de tales instrumentos tienen su grado apropiado de tensión, dan, cuando se tocan, un sonido armonioso, pero tan pronto como se relajan o se atornillan, no dan ningún sonido. Esto puede explicar, en cierta medida, los sueños comunes: pero incluso suponiendo que no debamos admitir que Salomón había estado el día anterior solicitando seriamente el don de la sabiduría de Dios, sin embargo, podríamos conceder que un sueño como éste podría ser producido por la influencia inmediata de Dios en el alma. Y si Salomón recibió su sabiduría por inspiración inmediata del cielo, éste fue el tipo de sueño que tuvo; un sueño por el cual esa sabiduría fue realmente comunicada. Pero probablemente no sea necesario llevar este asunto hasta el milagro: Dios pudo ser el autor de su extraordinaria sabiduría, como fue el autor de sus extraordinarias riquezas. Algunos dicen: "Se acostó tan ignorante como los demás hombres, y sin embargo se levantó por la mañana más sabio que todos los hijos de los hombres".
