Samuel 17:9"> 9 He aquí él estará ahora escondido en alguna cueva, ó en otro lugar: y si al principio cayeren algunos de los tuyos, oirálo quien lo oyere, y dirá: El pueblo que sigue á Absalom ha sido derrotado. Samuel 17:10"> 10 Así aun el hombre valiente, cuyo corazón sea como corazón de león, sin duda desmayará: porque todo Israel sabe que tu padre es hombre valiente, y que los que están con él son esforzados. Samuel 17:11"> 11 Aconsejo pues que todo Israel se junte á ti, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, en multitud como la arena que está á la orilla de la mar, y que tú en persona vayas á la batalla. Samuel 17:12"> 12 Entonces le acometeremos en cualquier lugar que pudiere hallarse, y daremos sobre él como cuando el rocío cae sobre la tierra, y ni uno dejaremos de él, y de todos los que con él están. Samuel 17:13"> 13 Y si se recogiere en alguna ciudad, todos los de Israel traerán sogas á aquella ciudad, y la arrastraremos hasta el arroyo, que nunca más parezca piedra de ella. Samuel 17:14"> 14 Entonces Absalom y todos los de Israel dijeron: El consejo de Husai Arachîta es mejor que el consejo de Achitophel. Porque había Jehová ordenado que el acertado consejo de Achitophel se frustara, para que Jehová hiciese venir el mal sobre Absalom. Samuel 17:15"> 15 Dijo luego Husai á Sadoc y á Abiathar sacerdotes: Así y así aconsejó Achitophel á Absalom y á los ancianos de Israel: y de esta manera aconsejé yo. Samuel 17:16"> 16 Por tanto enviad inmediatemente, y dad aviso á David, diciendo: No quedes esta noche en los campos del desierto, sino pasa luego el Jordán, porque el rey no sea consumido, y todo el pueblo que con él está. Samuel 17:17"> 17 Y Jonathán y Ahimaas estaban junto á la fuente de Rogel, porque no podían ellos mostrarse viniendo á la ciudad; fué por tanto una criada, y dióles el aviso: y ellos fueron, y noticiáronlo al rey David. Moreover, Ahithophel said unto Absalom,.... Either at the same time, or quickly after he had given the foregoing advice:

let me now choose out twelve thousand men: out of those that were with Absalom, which shows their number to be large; and twelve thousand are pitched upon with respect to the twelve tribes of Israel, a thousand from every tribe; Josephus has only ten thousand;

and I will arise and pursue after David this night; he took upon him to be general of the army, as well as a counsellor; or this he said to show how confident he was of the success of his counsel, that if Absalom, or any other, should decline the conduct of the army upon it, as a hazardous attempt, he would undertake it himself; or rather it may be, he was not willing that Absalom should go out in person with the army, not so much for his own safety, as lest through his affection for the king he should spare him, when he fell into his hands, or they two should be reconciled; he proposed to do it that night, partly for expedition, no time being to be lost, and partly for the greater surprise of David and his men.

This night - The night of the day on which David fled, and Absalom entered into Jerusalem. Ahithophel’s idea was to fall upon David by surprise, and in the first confusion of the surprised army to seize and kill David only.

Hushai informs Zadok and Abiathar; and they send word to David,

Ahithophel, finding his counsel slighted, goes home, sets his

house in order, and hangs himself, 23.

David moves to Mahanaim; and Absalom follows him over Jordan,

24-26.

Several friends meet David at Mahanaim with refreshments and

provisions, 27-29.

NOTES ON CHAP. XVII

Verse 2 Samuel 17:1. Let me now choose out twelve thousand men — Had this counsel been followed, David and his little troop would soon have been destroyed; nothing but the miraculous interposition of God could have saved them. Twelve thousand chosen troops coming against him, in his totally unprepared state, would have soon settled the business of the kingdom. Ahithophel well saw that, this advice neglected, all was lost.
