1 Chronicles 5:16 — in Gilead: i.e. in part of it, other parts having been allotted to the halftribes of Reubenites and Manassites (Numbers 32:39-40 . Deuteronomy 3:13 .Joshua 13:31; Joshua 13:31 ).

2 Chronicles 16:9 — the eyes of the LORD. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. Compare Proverbs 15:3 .Job 34:21 .Psalms 139:2 .Jeremiah 16:17 . Zechariah 4:10 . perfect = whole, as in Deuteronomy 27:6 .

Esther 1:8 — law. Heb, dath = royal decree, or special mandate, as in verses: Esther 1:1 , Esther 1:13 , Esther 1:15 , Esther 1:19 ; Esther 3:8 ; Esther 4:11 , Esther 4:16 .

Psalms 130:2 — LORD *. One of the 134 places where the Sopherim altered Jehovah to Adonai. See App-32 . So also verses: Psalms 130:3 ; Psalms 130:6 . ears . Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6 .

Proverbs 10:5 — gathereth in summer, &c. Illustrations: Isaac (Genesis 18:19 ); Joseph (Genesis 47:12 ); Timothy (2 Timothy 3:15 .Acts 16:1 , Acts 16:2 ). sleepeth in harvest. Compare Proverbs 24:30-34 .

Proverbs 3:4 — understanding = insight. Hebrew. sekel. See note on "wisdom" (Proverbs 1:2 ), No. 6. Not the same word as in Proverbs 3:5 . God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 . man. Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 .

Isaiah 11:16 — highway. See note on Isaiah 7:3 . like as it was. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 14:22 ). App-92 . in the day = when. See note on Genesis 2:17 , and App-18 .

Isaiah 23:2 — isle. Here, Tyre itself. thou whom = which. pass over = cross, in trading. In verses: Isaiah 23:2 , Isaiah 23:3 , Isaiah 23:6 , Isaiah 23:10 , Isaiah 23:12 , imperative, implying flight.

Jeremiah 13:19 — cities. So in Codex "Mugah"; but Codex "Hallel" (both quoted in the Massorah) reads "eyes". the south = the Negeb. See note on Psalms 126:4 . Compare Genesis 12:9 ; Genesis 13:3 .

Ezekiel 10:8 — man's = human. Hebrew. 'adam . App-14 . The same word as in Ezekiel 10:14 ; Ezekiel 10:21 . Not the same as in verses: Ezekiel 10:2 , Ezekiel 10:3 , Ezekiel 10:6 .

Ezekiel 17:20 — spread My net upon him. Compare Ezekiel 12:13 ; Ezekiel 32:3 . plead = reckon. Compare Ezekiel 20:36 ; Ezekiel 38:22 . trespass that he hath trespassed . See note on Ezekiel 15:8 .

Ezekiel 46:19 — holy . See note on Exodus 3:2 . chambers = storerooms. Heb, lishkah . See note on Ezekiel 40:17 . behold . Figure of speech Asterismos . App-6 . on the two sides = on the farthest side.

Daniel 3:25 — the son of God = a son of God (no Art.): i.e. a superhuman being, or an angel. Compare Daniel 3:28 , and see App-23 . Nebuchadnezzar could know nothing of N.T. revelation.

Hosea 9:11 — from the birth, &c. = no birth, none with child, no conception. conception. This particular word herayon occurs only here, and Ruth 4:13 . A similar word (Hebrew. haron) in Genesis 3:16 .

Joel 3:10 — Beat your plowshares, &c. This precedes the opposite command to be given after this in Isaiah 2:4 and Micah 4:3 , when Hosea 2:18 shall be fulfilled. pruninghooks : or, scythes.

Haggai 1:2 — the LORD of hosts. See note on 1 Samuel 1:3 . This People. Not Zerubbabel or Joshua. time. Repeated here and in Haggai 1:4 for emphasis. not. Septuagint reads "not yet".

Malachi 3:2 — who may abide. ? Compare Joel 2:11 . Figure. abide = endure soap = lye; as in Job 9:30 , i.e. water mixed with the ashes of certain plants containing alkali. Compare Mark 9:3 .

Matthew 13:16 — blessed = happy, as in Matthew 5:3 , &c. your eyes . . . your ears = ye. "Eyes" and "ears" being put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of the Part), App-6 , for the persons themselves.

Matthew 6:6 — closet = store-chamber. Hence a secret chamber where treasures were stored. Occurs only here, Matthew 24:26 , and Luke 12:3 , Luke 12:24 . Compare Isaiah 26:20 . 2 Kings 4:33 .
