1 Kings 16:34 — build = to fortify and complete. It had been partially restored (Judges 3:13 . 2 Samuel 10:5 ), but now became a fortified city of Israel. in = at the cost of. which He spake . Compare Joshua 6:26 .
1 Chronicles 26:20 — of the Levites, Ahijah was. The Septuagint reads "the Levites their brethren were" (reading Ahikem instead of Ahijah). treasures = treasuries. There were several in divers places, with various names. dedicated = holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 .
1 Chronicles 6:31 — service = the hands: hands being put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for the work done by them. ark had rest. See 1 Chronicles 16:1 , notes on 1 Chronicles 13:3 , and Exodus 25:22 .
Job 3:23 — Why . . . ? Figure of speech Ellipsis. App-6 . supplies the sentence from v- 20; but it may be repeated from Job 3:22 , "the grave", regarding verses: Job 21:22 as a parenthesis. GOD. Hebrew Eloah. App-4 .
Psalms 142:3 — spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . was overwhelmed = fainted. Hebrew = was darkened. Compare Psalms 77:3 ; Psalms 107:5 ; Psalms 143:4 . Elsewhere only Jonah 2:8 , and Lamentations 2:12 . then = then [I remembered] Thou knewest, &c.

Isaiah 14:18 — lie = sleep. Hebrew. shakab. So rendered twelve times in O.T. glory = state or honour. house = burial-house, or mausoleum. 1 Kings 2:10 , 1Ki 2:34 ; 1 Samuel 25:1 ; 1 Samuel 28:3 Ecclesiastes 12:5 .
Isaiah 21:9 — men. Hebrew. 'ish. App-14 . Babylon is fallen, &c. Note the Figure of speech Epizeuxis , for emphasis. the graven images of her gods. Reference to Pentateuch. Phrase peculiar to Deuteronomy 7:25 ; Deuteronomy 12:3 . App-92 .
Isaiah 52:1 — Awake. Same form as in Isaiah 51:9 ; not the same as in Isaiah 51:17 . Figure of speech Epizeuxis. App-6 . the holy city. Hebrew "the city of the Sanctuary". See note on Exodus 3:5 .
Jeremiah 33:21 — My covenant . . . with David. Wholly unconditional. Compare 2 Samuel 7:12 , &c. Compare Psalms 89:3 , Psalms 89:4 , Psalms 89:20-37 , and Jer 132:11 , with Jeremiah 31:35-37 , and Jeremiah 33:17-26 .
Jeremiah 40:5 — Now while he was not yet gone back = And ere yet he could make reply. Gedaliah. See note on Jeremiah 26:24 , and Compare Jeremiah 39:14 . Shaphan. See note on 2 Kings 22:3 . reward = present.
Jeremiah 50:5 — thitherward. Hebrew = hitherward. Jeremiah was therefore not in Babylon, but in Egypt. perpetual. Another evidence that this prophecy refers to the future covenant. Compare Jeremiah 3:18 Jeremiah 4:2 ; Jeremiah 11:1-6 ; Jeremiah 31:31 .
Ezekiel 20:7 — every man. Heb . 'ish. App-14 . abominations. Put by Figure of speech metonymy (of Cause, App-6 , for that which Jehovah abominated. defile not yourselves , &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 18:3 ). App-92 . idols = manufactured gods.
Ezekiel 47:8 — east country = the eastern Allah i.e. circular border-land. Used of the Jordan in Joshua 22:11 . desert = plain. Hebrew 'arabah. See Deuteronomy 3:17 ; Deuteronomy 4:49 . the sea. The sea = called Salt, or Dead Sea.
