2 Kings 23:4 — priests of the second order (or degree), i.e. ordinary priests. the grove = the 'Asherah. See App-42 . host of heaven. Compare 2 Kings 21:3 . burned them. As prescribed in Deuteronomy 7:25 . unto Beth-el. To defile the altar there, according to the prophecy in 1 Kings 13:2 .

1 Chronicles 16:11 — His strength. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), App-6 . "Strength" put for the Ark, which was the sign of the presence of Jehovah, and the symbol of His strength. Compare Psalms 105:4 with Psalms 132:8 , and see note on 1 Chronicles 13:3 and Exodus 25:22 .

2 Chronicles 16:12 — sought not. Contrast Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:2 .Isaiah 38:2 , Isaiah 38:3 .) physicians = healers. First occurrence of mention of them among the Hebrews. These belonged to the priestly tribe, with traditional knowledge, more or less superstitious. Compare Job 13:4 . In NT. we have Luke (Colossians 4:14 ).

2 Chronicles 34:33 — took away. Compare 1Ki 23:4-8 . children = sons. serve, even to serve. Figure of speech Epizeuxis. all his days. Significant words, showing that in their hearts the people were still inclined to worship other gods, as Jeremiah testifies (Jeremiah 25:3 . See also Jeremiah 11:0 and Jeremiah 13:0 .

2 Chronicles 5:4 — the Levites toot up. These were the bearers, but the priests (being Levites also) brought it into the house (as stated in 2 Chronicles 5:7 and 1 Kings 8:3 ). Hence, in 2 Chronicles 5:5 they are called "the priests and the Levites". See note on Deuteronomy 17:9 .

Nehemiah 4:4 — Hear. turn. Figure of speech Apostrophe. Nehemiah's prayer an echo of Psalms 120, 121, 123:Psalms 120:3-4 , 124, 125, 127, and 129. In accord with that dispensation. God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 . despised = become a taunt. captivity. Some codices, with six early printed editions and Syriac, read "their captivity".

Esther 3:1 — After these things. Hainan was not made Grand Vizier till five years later. See Esther 3:7 . Ahasuerus. See note on Esther 1:1 . Agagite. A descendant of Amalekite kings (Numbers 24:7 . 1 Samuel 15:8 , 1 Samuel 15:32 ). Called an Amalekite by Josephus ( Antiquities xi. 6, 5).

Psalms 121:1 — Title. A Song. Hebrew. shir . See App-65 . of degrees = for, or relating to the degrees. Only here thus. Hebrew. lamma'aloth. See note on Title of 120. hills = mountains. Add a full stop. From whence, &c? Punctuate this line as a question. Compare Jeremiah 3:23 . cometh = is to come.

Psalms 44:9 — But = But now. Hebrew. 'aph (not ki, as in Psalms 44:3 and Psalms 44:7 ). Very emphatic, marking great contrast, as in Psalms 68:16 ("Yea"). Some codices, with Aramaean, read "Howbeit". cast off (as with contempt). Compare Psalms 43:2 . Some codices, with Syriac, read "cast us off".

Proverbs 1:33 — shall dwell safely. Illustrations: Noah (Genesis 6:22 ; Genesis 7:23 .Hebrews 11:7; Hebrews 11:7 ); Shadrach, &c. Proverbs 3:6 — acknowledge = recognize, or own. direct = rightly divide: i.e. dividing and thus showing what is right or pleasing to God. Hebrew. yashar. Numbers 23:27 . Compare Judges 14:3 , Judges 14:7 ; 1Sa 18:20 , 1 Samuel 18:26 . Rendered by Septuagint orthotomeo, the same word as in 2 Timothy 2:15 .

Proverbs 9:3 — sent forth her maidens. An Eastern custom.
