1 Kings 11:15 — it came to pass, &c. Compare 2 Samuel 8:3-13 . Joab. Compare Psalms 60:0 , title, and see note on 2 Samuel 8:13 . every male: i.e. who did not flee, as Hadad did. Supply Figure of speech Ellipsis ( App-6 ), "every male [whom he found] in Edom". See 1 Kings 11:17 .
2 Kings 18:9 — it came to pass. Compare 2 Kings 17:3-6 . Shalmaneser. Commenced the siege; Sargon, his successor, completed it after three years. Compare 2 Kings 17:5 , 2 Kings 17:6 , where we have the same interval as here. In Saigon's own inscription he refers to the "tributes imposed upon them by the former king".
Esther 4:16 — three days, night or day. The Jerusalem Talmud says "a day and night together make up a nulctke-meron, and that any part of such period is counted as a whole". Compare 1 Samuel 30:12 , 1 Samuel 30:13 . Jon 1:17 . Matthew 12:40 . I perish. See note on Esther 3:13 .
Job 5:1 — to which . . . ? Figure of speech Erotesis. App-6 . In the Vulgate versions this is changed to a command: and it is quoted in support of "the invocation of saints". saints = holy ones: i.e. the angels. Compare Job 15:15 .Deuteronomy 33:2 .Jude 1:14 . So Septuagint. See note on "holy". Exodus 3:5 .
Psalms 1:3 — be = become, or prove. Figure of speech Simile. App-6 . Like a tree. The first of two comparisons. See Psalms 1:4 . planted: i.e. in a garden. Not a "tree of the field". rivers = divisions irrigating a garden. Hebrew. palgey-mayim. See note on Proverbs 21:1 . prosper. Compare Genesis 39:3 , Genesis 39:23 .
Psalms 2:6 — set = founded. Not the same word as Psalms 2:2 . My holy hill. Figure of speech Antimeria ( App-6 ). Hebrew = "mount of my Sanctuary". holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 . Zion. The mount immediately south of Moriah. See note on 2 Samuel 5:7 . Occurs thirty-eight times in Psalms. "Jerusalem" occurs seventeen times.
Psalms 25:2 — I trust = have confided. Hebrew. batah . See App-69 . Not the same word as in Psalms 25:20 . not. Hebrew. 'al (= Greek. me), subjective. Compare "none", Psalms 25:3 . ashamed = put to shame. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause) as a verb. So Psalms 25:20 ; Psalms 31:1 ; Psalms 119:116 , &c. enemies = foes.
Psalms 50:14 — Offer. Hebrew. zabach. App-43 . Here is true worship. See Psalms 50:23 ; Psalms 40:6 ; Psalms 51:17 . Hebrews 13:15 . Compare Isaiah 1:11-14 .Jeremiah 7:22 , Jeremiah 7:23 .Hosea 6:6 . Amos 5:21 . This is the opposite of "unthankful" (2 Timothy 3:2 ). MOST HIGH. Hebrew Elyon. App-4 .
Psalms 51:10 — Create. Hebrew. bara' , as in Genesis 1:1 . The new heart is not the old one changed, but newly created: i.e. "begotten" by God, as in John 3:6-8 . right = steadfast. Compare Psalms 78:37 ; Psalms 112:7 . spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . Put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Part), for whole character.
Psalms 62:12 — LORD*. One of the 134 alterations of Jehovah to Adonai by the Sopherim. App-32 . mercy = grace. Thou renderest, &c. Quoted in Matthew 16:27 . Romans 2:6 . 1 Corinthians 3:8 . 2 Timothy 4:14 .Revelation 2:23 ; Revelation 20:12 , Revelation 20:13 ; Revelation 22:12 . every man. Hebrew. 'ish . App-14 .
Psalms 91:11 — He shall give. See Matthew 4:6 . Luke 4:10 . in all thy ways. These words were omitted by Satan, the Scripture being misquoted and misapplied. The words "at any time" are added in Matthew 4:6 . Verse 13 is also omitted, because it refers to Satan's own head being crushed (Genesis 3:15 ).
Proverbs 20:17 — Bread of deceit = Bread gained by deceit. Genitive of Origin. See App-17 (2). Bread. Put by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Part), for all kinds of food. deceit = lying. Hebrew. sheker. See note on Proverbs 11:18 . filled with gravel: or grit. See note on Genesis 3:14 , implying utmost disappointment. See App-19 .
Proverbs 24:9 — thought, &c. Compare Proverbs 4:23 .Job 1:5 .Jeremiah 4:14 .Matthew 9:3 , Matthew 9:4 ; Matthew 15:19 , Matthew 15:20 . foolishness = the foolish. Hebrew. 'evil (Proverbs 24:7 ). sin. Hebrew. chata'. App-44 . scorner = scoffer. men. Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 . Same word as in verses: Proverbs 24:12 , Proverbs 24:30 .
Proverbs 25:19 — unfaithful = treacherous. Hebrew. bagad. See note on "transgressors" (Proverbs 11:3 ). foot out of joint = a tottering foot. Illustrations: Micah (Judges 18:20 ); Ben-hadad (2 Kings 8:8-15 . 2 Chronicles 28:20 , 2 Chronicles 28:21 ); Israelites (Isaiah 30:1-5 ); Zedekiah (Jeremiah 37:5-7 ); compare Ezekiel 17:15 ; Ezekiel 29:7 .
Isaiah 21:13 — burden. The seventh and last of the seven burdens upon Arabia: ba'rab = in Arabia. in Arabia: or, in the evening, or, at sunset. The name is as significant as "Dumah" (Isaiah 21:11 ). travelling companies = caravans. Dedanim = Dedanites, Descendants of Abraham by Keturah: Dedan, son of Midian (Genesis 25:3 . 1 Chronicles 1:32 ).
Deuteronomy 31:10 — At the end, &c. Compare Deuteronomy 15:1 . solemnity = appointed time. Hebrew. mo'ed. year of release. So called in Deuteronomy 15:9 . The "release" is referred to in Deuteronomy 15:1 , Deuteronomy 15:2 , Deuteronomy 15:3 . The noun "release" occurs only in these two passages. The verb occurs in Exodus 23:11 . tabernacles = booths.
Deuteronomy 31:29 — I know. Compare Acts 20:28 , Acts 20:29 . the latter days. Compare Genesis 49:1 (Numbers 24:14 ). Used by Moses, Deuteronomy 4:39 . Found also in Jeremiah 23:20 ; Jeremiah 48:47 ; Jeremiah 49:39 . Ezekiel 38:16 . Hosea 3:5 .Micah 4:1 . the work, &c, viz., idolatry and other evils.
Judges 12:6 — frame = take heed, give attention. forty and two thousand = 40 + 2,000 = 2,040. The whole tribe numbered only 32,500 at previous census (Numbers 26:37 ; see note on Judges 7:3 ), and that was less than the first numbering (Numbers 1:33 ). Only 1,000 from each tribe formed the army. Numbers 31:4 , Numbers 31:6 .
Judges 16:5 — lords. See note on Joshua 13:3 . afflict = humble. eleven hundred. One of the two occurrences of this number. Eleven = the number of defective administration (= 12 - 1. See App-10 ). Compare Judges 17:2 , where similar want of rule is seen. This 1,100 ruined them politically; the other (Judges 17:2 ) ruined them religiously.
1 Samuel 2:24 — for. Hebrew has the disjunctive accent on this word (Great Telisha), emphasising the guilt of Hophni and Phinehas as (1) a public scandal (1 Samuel 2:23 ); (2) a cause of stumbling (1 Samuel 2:24 ); (3) a sin against Jehovah (1 Samuel 2:25 ). to transgress, or cry out. Hebrew ` abar. App-44 .
