Zephaniah 3:4 — light = reckless. treacherous persons = men (Hebrew. 'enosh, App-14 .) of treacheries; placing the emphasis on the treachery. polluted = profaned. Hebrew. halal. Haggai 1:5 — Consider = Set your heart on, or give your attention to. Occurs five times m this hook (Haggai 1:5 , Haggai 1:7 ; Haggai 2:15 , Haggai 2:18 , Haggai 2:18 ). Compare Job 1:8 ; Job 2:3 .Isaiah 41:22 . your ways: i.e. the ways in which ye have been led, your experiences which are detailed in the next verse.

Zechariah 2:8 — the LORD of hosts. See note on Zechariah 1:3 . After the glory = For His own glory. he that, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 32:10 ). App-92 . His eye . The primitive text read "Mine eye"; but the Sopherim say ( App-33 ) that they altered this to "His", regarding it as derogatory to Jehovah to rend aloud such pronounced anthropomorphic expressions.

Matthew 26:17 — the first day. The eating of the Passover took place on the fourteenth of Nisan. See Exodus 12:6 , Exodus 12:8 , Exodus 12:18 . Leviticus 23:5 .Numbers 9:3 ; Numbers 28:16 . The fifteenth was the high sabbath, the first day of the feast. See Numbers 28:17 . Where . . . ? This question shows that the date was the fourteenth of Nisan.

Matthew 5:40 — if any man, &c. = to him who, wishing to go to law with thee. will = wishing. Greek. thelo. See App-102 . coat = now called the sulta = an outer jacket or tunic, Greek. chiton. cloke. The jibbeh, juteh, or benish, a long robe or mantle, full, with short sleeves, Greek. himation. See Matthew 27:32 .Mark 15:21 . Compare Luke 3:14 .

Mark 1:7 — There cometh One = He Who eometh [is]. after = behind; as to time. Not the same as in Mark 1:14 . latchet = thong. shoes = sandals, To unloose the sandals of another was a proverbial expression. Figure of speech Paranoia ( App-6 ). Supplemental to "bear" in Matthew 3:11 . not . Greek. ou. App-105 . worthy = fit. stoop down . A Divine supplement. Occurs only here.

Mark 14:6 — Jesus . App-98 . wrought . The object had been accomplished. In John 12:7 (on the former occasion) it was to be reserved for the burial. good = happy, excellent, appropriate. Not the same word as in Mark 14:7 . on. Greek. eis. App-104 . Not the same word as in verses: Mark 14:2 , Mark 14:3 , Mark 14:35 , Mark 14:48 .

Mark 5:42 — walked = began walking. astonished . astonishment. Figure of speech Polyptoton ( App-6 ), for emphasis. See Genesis 26:28 . Greek. existemi = to be put out [of one's mind], Noun, ekstasis; hence, Eng. ecstasy = entrancement, implying bewilderment. See Mark 16:8 . Luke 5:26 , Acts 3:10 . Used of a trance, Acts 10:10 ; Acts 11:5 ; Acts 22:17 . Hence, Eng. entrancement.

Luke 16:24 — he cried and said = crying out, he said. The Pharisees gave long stories of similar imaginary conversations and discourses. See Lightfoot, vol. xi, pp. 165-7. Father Abraham. Compare Matthew 3:9 . John 8:39 . cool. Greek. katapsucho. Occurs only here. A medical word. tormented distressed. Greek. odunaomai. Occurs only in Luke (here, Luke 2:48 , and Acts 20:38 , "sorrowing").

Luke 21:32 — Verily . See note on Matthew 5:18 . This generation. See note on Matthew 11:16 . till all be fulfilled = till (Greek. eos an) all may possiblyto pass. (Not the same word as "fulfilled" in Luke 21:24 .) Had the nation repented at Peter's call, in Acts 2:38 ; Acts 3:19-26 , "all that the prophets had spoken" would have come to pass.

Luke 23:33 — to . Greek. epi. App-104 . Calvary is the Greek for the Hebrew Golgotha = a skull. Now called "a hill". But see Conder's Jerusalem, p. 80. crucified . See App-162 . on = at. Greek. ek. App-104 . and the other = and one. left. Greek. aristeros. Only here, Mat 6:3 . 2 Corinthians 6:7 . Not the same word as in Matthew 27:38 .

Luke 3:21 — it came to pass . As in Luke 3:1 . The 1611 edition of the Authorized Version reads "and it came to pass". praying . Note the occasions of the Lord's praying: here; Luke 6:16 ; Luke 6:12 ; Luke 9:18 , Luke 9:28 ; Luke 11:1 ; Luke 22:41-44 . the heaven. Singular. See notes on Matthew 6:9 , Matthew 6:10 .

Luke 7:36 — And one , &c. Verses 36-50 peculiar to Luke. Not to be identified with Simon (Mark 14:3 ). All the circumstances are different. Simon was one of the commonest names. There are nine mentioned in the N.T., and two among the Twelve. desired = asked, or invited. App-134 . with = in company with. Greek. meta. App-104 . sat down to meat = reclined [at table].

Luke 8:10 — is = has been. know = get to know. See App-132 . mysteries = secrets. others = the rest. Greek. hoi loipoi. Compare Acts 5:13 .Romans 11:7 . John 3:20 — doeth = practises, or (habitually) does. Greek. prasso evil. Greek. phaulos = worthless, base. Occurs only here; John 5:29 . Titus 2:8 . James 3:16 , in Rec. Text, but in Romans 9:11 . 2 Corinthians 5:10 , in most texts for kakos. Here, plural worthless things. neither = and . . . not. Greek. ou. App-105 . reproved = brought home to him. Compare John 16:8 (convince).
