Proverbs 12:23 — concealeth knowledge. Illustrations: Samuel (1 Samuel 9:27 . Compare Proverbs 10:16 ); Nehemiah (Nehemiah 6:2 , Nehemiah 6:3 ). fools. Hebrew. kesil. See note on Proverbs 1:7 . Isaiah 12:2 — GOD. Hebrew El. App-4 . trust = confide in. Hebrew. batah. App-69 . THE LORD. Hebrew Jah. App-4 . JEHOVAH. One of the four passages where Jehovah is transliterated instead of being translated (Exodus 6:3 .Psalms 83:18 , and Isaiah 26:4 ). Also one of several words where different type is used. Isaiah 14:1 — choose. See note on Isaiah 1:29 . set them = make them rest. Compare Isaiah 14:3 . land = soil strangers = sojourners, foreign proselytes. Isaiah sees far beyond the Captivity. Hebrew. gur. See note on Isaiah 5:17 . Thus, the mention of strangers is not confined to latter part of Isaiah as alleged by some. See App-79 . the house of Jacob. See note on Isaiah 2:5 .
Isaiah 2:22 — Cease ye = Let go. breath, &c. Hebrew. neshamah ( App-16 ). Occurs twice in the "former" portion (Isaiah 2:22 ; Isaiah 30:33 ) and twice in the "latter "portion (Isaiah 42:5 ; Isaiah 57:16 , "soul"). App-79 : Reference to Pentateuch (Genesis 2:7 ). for wherein. ? Figure of speech Erotesis , for emphasis. accounted of = reckoned on. Compare Psalms 146:3 , Psalms 146:4 .Jeremiah 17:5 .
Isaiah 45:13 — raised him up : i.e. raised Cyrus up. he shall build My city. Nehemiah rebuilt only the walls. See Nehemiah 7:4 . The city was not rebuilt until after the return under Zerubbabel, and the emancipation by Cyrus. See App-68 . captives. Hebrew captivity. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), for the captives in it. the LORD of hosts. See note on 1 Samuel 1:3
Jeremiah 11:2 — the words. Plural, indicating the many utterances of "this covenant". this covenant. The old covenant of Exodus had been specially renewed by Judah in Jeremiah's days, under Josiah, in his eighteenth year (2 Kings 23:1-3 ). Judah. Emphasized by repeated reference here. Compare verses: Jeremiah 11:2 , Jeremiah 11:6 , Jeremiah 11:9 , Jeremiah 2:10 , Jeremiah 2:12 , Jeremiah 2:13 , Jeremiah 2:17 .
Jeremiah 25:34 — shepherds = rulers (of all kinds). Compare Jeremiah 2:8 ; Jeremiah 6:3 . All three had miserable ends: Jehoiakim (Jeremiah 22:18 ; Jeremiah 36:30 ); Jehoiachin, taken to Babylon; and Zedekiah, after his eyes were put out. principals = strong ones. of your dispersions: or, when ye are dispersed. So in the Mugah Codex (quoted in the Massorah), with three early printed editions. pleasant = precious (i.e. fair, but fragile).
Jeremiah 26:11 — This man is worthy to die = Death's judgment is for this man: "judgment" being put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of the Cause), for the effect of it: viz. the sentence of death (idiomatically rendered in Authorized Version.) Compare John 3:19 , where krisis is put for the act or process of judging. See App-85 . man. Hebrew. 'ish. App-14 . as = according as.
Jeremiah 29:1 — words: i.e. prophecies, as in Jeremiah 25:1 ; Jeremiah 26:1 ; Jeremiah 27:1 ; Jeremiah 30:1 , &c. letter = writing. residue of the elders. Compare Ezekiel 8:1 ; Ezekiel 14:1 ; Ezekiel 20:1 . the prophets: i.e. Ezekiel (Jeremiah 1:1 ); Daniel (Jeremiah 1:6 ). Nebuchadnezzar. Same spelling as throughout Jeremiah 2:0 8 and Jeremiah 29:3 here. Not the same as in Jeremiah 29:21 .
Jeremiah 6:6 — the LORD of hosts = Jehovah Zebbaioth, the first of thirtynine occurrences of this title in Jeremiah (Jeremiah 6:6 , Jeremiah 6:9 ; Jeremiah 8:3 ; Jeremiah 9:7 , Jeremiah 9:17 ; Jeremiah 10:16 ; Jeremiah 11:17 , Jeremiah 11:20 , Jeremiah 11:22 ; Jeremiah 19:11 ; Jeremiah 20:12 ; Jeremiah 23:15 , &c.) cast a mount = pour out: i.e. the earth from baskets to make a mount.
Jeremiah 7:29 — Cut off thine hair. A symbol of mourning. Jerusalem: or, supply "daughter of My People". Compare Jeremiah 8:11 , Jeremiah 8:19 , Jeremiah 8:21 , Jeremiah 8:22 ; Jeremiah 9:1 , Jeremiah 9:7 . The verb is feminine (singular) cast it away. Showing the completeness of the operation. high places. As such. Compare Jeremiah 3:21 . of. Genitive of Relation. App-17 . Compare Romans 8:36 ,
Ezekiel 16:8 — behold. Figure of speech Asterismos. App-6 . thy . . . thee : i.e. the city. Not the nation at Sinai, thy time , &c. Of this covenant nothing has been recorded. The secret is here first revealed. I spread My skirt , he. The symbolic act to-day, signifying the taking under one's protection. Common in the East for marrying. Compare Ruth 3:9 . saith the Lord God [is] Adonai Jehovah's oracle.
Ezekiel 21:3 — Behold. Figure of speech Asterismos. App-6 . draw forth My sword , See note on Ezekiel 5:2 , Ezekiel 5:17 , and Ezekiel 12:14 . the righteous , &c. Therefore Ezekiel 18:2 , Ezekiel 18:3 , is not yet ful filled, but corresponds with the green tree and the dry of Ezekiel 20:47 . the righteous = a righteous one. the wicked = a lawless one. Heb, rasha'. App-44 .
Ezekiel 46:22 — courts joined = courts covered over, or closed courts, cloisters. corners. Hebrew. m hukzaoth , This hybrid word has the extraordinary points ( App-31 ) or dots on the top, denoting that it does not properly belong to the primitive text. It is omitted in Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate. The clause should therefore read: "these four were of the some measure" (see Ginsburg's Introduction, pp. 382-3).
Daniel 1:8 — purposed in his heart = made up his mind. Compare Proverbs 23:7 . defile himself, &c . This was because meat was killed with the blood (contrary to Leviticus 3:17 ; Leviticus 7:26 ; Leviticus 17:10-14 ; Leviticus 19:26 ), and offered to idols (Exodus 34:15 . 1 Corinthians 10:20 . Compare Acts 15:29 ). Not because they were acting on vegetarian and temperance principles.
Daniel 8:2 — I was at = I was in. Daniel may have retired there (during the lycanthropy of Nebuchadnezzar) when Nehemiah and Mordecai were in the court of Astyages (Nehemiah 1:1 ). That Daniel was there employed by Astyages is clear from Daniel 8:27 . Shushan . The chief city of all Persia. river . Hebrew. 'ubal = canal. Only here, and in verses: Daniel 8:3 , Daniel 8:6 .
Jonah 4:1 — displeased = vexed. Not the waywardness of a child, but the displeasure of a man of God, for great and sufficient reason to him. Now that Nineveh was spared, it might after all be used as God's rod for Israel, and thus destroy the hope held out by him to Israel in 2 Kings 14:25 . See note on Jonah 3:5 and p. 1247.
