Ezekiel 27:6 — the company of the Ashurites , &c. = a daughter (or branch) of the Ashurites, &c. Ginsburg thinks this clause should read, "they have made thy benches with ivory [and] box = wood (or cypress)"; reading bith'ashshurim instead of bath-'aehshurim (= a daughter, or branch of the Ashurites), dividing and pointing the words differently. See note on Ezekiel 31:3 ; and compare Isaiah 41:19 ; Isaiah 60:13 . Chittim. Probably Cyprus.

Hosea 13:11 — I gave thee, &c. Reference to 1 Samuel 8:7 ; 1Sa 10:19 ; 1 Samuel 15:22 , 1 Samuel 15:23 ; 1 Samuel 16:1 . Compare Hosea 10:3 . Or, literally "I give . . . and take him away", referring to a continued act, the violent deaths of Israel's then recent kings: Zachariah murdered by Shallum; Shallum by Menahem; Pekahiah by Pekah; and Pekah by Hoshea, who was now a prisoner in Assyria.

Hosea 6:6 — I desired, &c. Compare 1 Samuel 15:22 .Ecclesiastes 5:1 .Micah 6:8 . mercy = lovingkindness. Quoted in Matthew 9:13 ; Matthew 12:7 . not sacrifice. Compare Psalms 50:8 , Psalms 50:9 . Zechariah 1:21 — he : i.e. the angel, these : i.e. these four smiths (or it may denote the supernatural princes over the kingdoms). They repre sent the Divine agencies raised up, by which Jehovah will overthrow them. fray. Short for affray-to terrify; hence English, afraid and affright. So the Hebrew harad = terrify. put in consternation (Hebrew. Hiphil, causative). Compare Zephaniah 3:13 . them : i.e. the kingdoms represented by the horns. Gentiles = nations.

Zechariah 6:11 — Then take, &c. This is another verse, noted in the Massorah ( App-30 ) as being one of twenty-six verses each of which contains all the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Compare Zephaniah 3:8 , crowns. Hebrew pl, referring to the several circlets forming one composite crown. Compare Zechariah 6:14 where it is used with a verb in the singular. Joshua. Josedech. Matthew 17:5 — spake = was speaking. a bright cloud. Was this the Shekhinah, the symbol of Jehovah's glory? out of. Greek. ek. This is My beloved Son. John 4:23 — cometh, and now is = is coming, and is now on its way. Its coming depended on the repentance of the nation, when all the prophecies would have been fulfilled.
